I just can't get excited about the latest round of console releases.
The WiiU is looking interesting but mostly as a current gen console with a tablet as a controller, if there is more to it I'd be delighted to see it, but I'm not so sure.
Of course, being Nintendo I feel compelled to buy it anyway, curse my Ninty heart!
In fact the only console that energizes me at the mo is the 3DS, new releases elsewhere just seem... Meh....

As for the PS4 and the new Xbox, I can't get my sap rising for those at all.
What cool and interesting things will they bring to the table that my late PS3 and 4th 360 don't already do?
    More multimedia hub crap?
    Another pointless Kinect?
    Incremental graphics improvements?
The promise of even more terrible IP updates from Sony and merely predictable ones from MS?

Honestly, the future of videogaming has never, ever seemed so... beige... or maybe magnolia.... or just plain boring...

I think I'll continue to invest my time in retro gaming, at least I still get a buzz from my Vectrex (literally) and my Saturn, amongst others.

    what's that?

sorry, I must have missed what you said... I was busy downloading a 5 gig mod for stalker shadow of chernobyl that adds about 200 hours of gameplay, makes the game incredibly difficult and is completely free

but yeah, gaming.. it's looking like it's in dire straits.

i have the problem of having too many games in my libary, which i still havent even dowloaded or started ( Batman arkham city, Jagged alliance, sanctum, Dues ex ), then i am trying to catch up with tropico 4, driver san francisco,, walking dead, TDU. all i play now is GW2, diablo 3, WoW, BF3. got borderlands 2 preordered, while trying to skip on dead souls, darksiders 2 for later!

If what i am overhelmded and annoyed, that i dont have enough time to play all that!
The lack of excitement over ps4 and xbox720 is very simple. THERE IS FECK ALL INFO ON BOUTH! You cant get excited on something that you dont know a thing about. wheres Wii U is just a ps3/xbox360 with tablet on joystick, which developers dont even want to bother with, unless Nintendo offers them some cookies and milk in exchange.

If you ask me, we are still in golden age of gaming, though i am a pc gamer...

P.S. PS vita got support for psone games!!! i downbloaded yesterday ff7 ff9 parasite eve 2 on it. i dont know when the feck i will have time to play all this as i am still playing MGS HD, rayman origins and mortal kombat on vita!

Can we make the assumption that the focus of the financial backers of gaming is currently aimed at the mobile gaming segment as this is such a growth industry at the moment?

This has the effect of stalling development of console and PC gaming.

Probably not. Zynga stock is tanking and people are realising there's little or no long term money to be made in mobile gaming. The numbers playing Draw Something collapsed after Zynga bought it for example.

Even then Zynga seem happy to rip off other games to a worrying extent. So much so that EA have sued.

The barrier to making mobile games should be lower compared to making 'proper' games. Smaller dev teams, fewer assets, simple game mechanics, probably consistent hardware and 2D graphics. But we expect our mobile games for free or a few pennies, and who actually clicks on an ad or an in app purchase?

We're simply seeing the end of a console generation, there isn't much info on the new boxes and some people are starting to look to PC gamin in the interim. PC gaming will of course continue to be dead once the new consoles launch. Mobile will continue to disappoint. :pac:

mobile gaming is a bubble. Those who were not a gamers, just fiddle around with something new and gone to their twitter or facebook. THE gamers got sick of touch screen crappy controls and got back to the proper gaming machines like consoles, handhelds or PCs.

I'm really only disappointed with the PS3 and Xbox 360. There was talk on all the major games forums that last year was a golden year for gaming. I find it hard now to even remember what was released last year that was good other than Dark Souls. The rest were all good but entirely forgettable games, stuff we won't be talking about in 5 years time. I don't see anything else on the horizon that is getting me excited.

Handheld gaming on the other hand has been fantastic. The DS is probably the best console ever made in my opinion and the 3DS seems to be heading that way. The PSP has been given a final lease of life with some truly exceptional releases on it despite it practically being a dead console. Also the Wii has been home to some very interesting games, far from the shovelware console some people tend to label it. Then there's PC gaming and the indie scene which really is were all the interesting stuff is being produced. The two big consoles are creatively bankrupt but you can find that creativity in downloadable and handheld titles.

the fact that this gen has gone on so long has sapped my hype for any new console tbh that and the fact that i got a proper gaming pc about 2 years ago and use my consoles for movies etc.

Loving the move to f2p mmo games on the pc, I really can't be bothered playing single player games or small multiplayer games like cod and bf. I can see myself getting my gaming fix for the next year with guild wars 2 and planetside 2, both have great community's attached to them and that's what makes me come back to them.

I'm excited but I don't like getting too excited about something that is still over 12-18+ months away. It's like looking forward to Christmas in February.

The WiiU, I have played and really like but it is just 6 years too late. If it came out against the PS3 and 360 at the start of this gen then I would be raving about it.

PC gaming still has the huge price and space barrier. It is still a grand to get mid range machine up and running.

Mobile gaming is hopefully dead along with those crap touch screen games. It has created a market for indie developer but for every one indie game that makes it thousands fail.

We still have loads of good games to look forward to Sony at Gamescom announced 4 or 5 very interesting different titles away from the norm. Even the "normal games" I love I just don't have time to play as much as I want.

Right now I'm playing through Darksiders 1, Red Dead Redemption, Hybrid (brilliant brilliant Hybrid) and still throwing time into TF2. Of those games only one came out this year and it's a downloadable title. After that I've still about another 50 games in my pile, not counting the Playstation Plus stuff. I haven't bought a fullproce game in a very long time because there's just so much good stuff to catch up on.

I agree with Ciderman and the follow up posts. This gen has gone on too long and for me is frankly boring. At least Nintendo have done something with the 3DS (and Sony with Vita I guess) to spruce up the hardware offerings. I am playing 'old' PS2 games on my PS3 and Dark Souls which as mentioned was an exception. Perhaps Skyrim was also an exception. I am slowly ditching my consoles in favor of a new PC build which I am researching components for. Its good to see PC games standardizing on 1080p as for me the gfx power there is of course many times greater than console not too mention zero loading times. I too get much enjoyment from my retro hardware and games simply because I find all these modern franchise too predicable or too quick. I finished Uncharted 3 in about 3 days and that was only a few hours per day (on hard difficulty).

I just see little to entice me to a new console.
Judging by the evolution of the Xbox dashboard we'll soon have to go through several menus, laden with ads for dlc and movie streaming apps, before getting to play the game in the drive.
Moves by Sony and MS could spell the end of preowned games too.
I don't know, Sony were such a non event with the PS3, I really lack the desire to go again with a new console.

Im bored of threads about how boring they're finding modern games. Worse than people who were teenagers in the 80's/90's whinging about modern music despite there being almost endless bands and artists available from almost every genre.

its a combination of thinking back on past games with rose tinted glasses and having being a kid that makes people think back on retro games as being better. sure there are some amazing games that still stand up to today's standards in terms of story telling but there were also bucket loads of crap.

this generation has been amazing we have never had so many games of such a high quality. modern warfare 4 reinvented the FPS genre, halflife 2, portal, la noire all set new levels in gameplay design.

Sony have a hugely diverse library on ps3 from journey, to little big planet to uncharted, resistence and infamous to name just a few.

COD4 didn't really reinvent anything, it may have refined and streamlined many existing features a lot but the formula quickly got stale when everyone else tried to copy it and Activision milked it dry. LA Noire also is a poor example, it has some awful design and doesn't come close to classic adventure games. Valve on the other hand continue to deliver innovation across all platforms and are probably the exception when it comes to console gaming.

That's not to say there hasn't been great moments in the current gen. The problem is with modern consoles, with the exception of the Wii. They've matured as a piece of consumer electronics and are converging into just another generic box for your TV with a standard controller. Past consoles were very much experimental with rapidly changing technology, crazy new controller designs and different media types. These machines existed at a time when genres were defined.

All the new boxes will really offer over the current gen is moar graphics for the next instalment of your favourite franchise.

I'm far from excited about what's to come, because I know nothing about what's to come. In the same way that I'm not excited about next christmas, because it's a long way off, and I've nothing planned. When some real info drops about the next gen, then I may start to feel something. But at the moment, it's all just games sites posting romours.

As I've said on here before, I'd be more than happy to get another few years out of my Xbox. Although this gen had some bad apples, it's still been an enjoyable experience, and I'll still enjoy playing more games on the console. They say that the power has been pretty much maxed out by now. Again, this doesn't bother me none. I don't need a bigger world with better graphics to have fun.

I've been playing consoles since the sega master system, and i dont think console release are getting less exciting. I still love to play old and new games.
I fear that as i get older i'll find things i used to love get boring

Are there some details of the next gen Xbox and PlayStation that I've missed? Because I really fail to see how anyone get excited or otherwise about them without knowing any details about them.

I'm tired of being american army in games.
I'm tired of walking into game shops and seeing nothing but FPS games or football games.
I'm tired of constant updates and excessive menus.
I'm tired of consoles trying to be social media compatible.
I'm tired of games being glitchy as hell on release (god knows how GTA5 will be).
I'm tired of monotonous games leading nowhere from start to finish.

The sooner the better a new war breaks out and i don't have to play every FPS in relation to Iraq or Russia.

I can't remember the last time i had a Silent Hill first time experience.

Although you do end up paying less for games and it's not a grand to get a decent PC. You'd have a very good PC for a grand.

I'm just happy that the consoles will upgrade what developers can do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,726 ✭✭✭✭noodler

How exactly do people who feel this generation has gone on too long think that new consoles will change things?

Surely, it is far better if this console can go on as long as possible, allowing the 360 and PS3 profits to increase as saturation goes up and costs come down. Would this then not lead to more indy games? More innovation?

If Sony or MS have to spend a billion dollars creating new machines then is it not a safe bet that COD and FIFA will be the first games out in order to appeal to as large an audience as possible?

I hope this gen goes on for ages.

    Demons Souls
    Dark Souls
    Fallout 3/New Vegas
    Valkyria Chronicles
    Peace Walker
    Kingdom Hearts BBS
    Mass Effect Trilogy
    Dead Space 1/2
    BioShock
    Uncharted

(I know some of those aren't really PS3/360 games but you get the idea).

For those cimply looking for graphical updates (again I personally think we are rapidly reaching a point of diminishing returns here but if its what you need) then just looking at the how great the likes of Uncharted or that amazing Metal Gear demo that was uploaded to the web over the weekend then there seems to be more devlopers can eek out of this gen.

Have you ever considered writing lyrics for an Emo band? You seem to be on the right route for it :pac:

I can see a new generation fixing the things you mentioned. Quite the opposite, I'd say. FPS games will surely show up, and this media center crap they've been pulling lately doesn't look like it's going to stop any time soon either.
