Medicine 6 year course or 5 year course?

So I was accepted into the 5 year medicine course in Nuig this year, and only now have people started telling me (guys who've done pre-med, i.e. the 6 year course, and guys who are doing the 6 year course this year) that I should do pre-med.

Is it better to do pre-med? I'm not too sure, but I'm young enough, only just turned 18, but I did have to repeat the L.C.

I'm smart, and I can work so the work in medicine is something I hope I can cope with, but people are telling me that I should do pre-med for the social side of college, and to ease myself into college life better than the 5 year course.

Also when I got the email from Nuig saying I was in the 5 year course, I saw no option to enter the 6 year course, so what do I do to get the 6 year course If I do in the end opt for that?

Add an extra year to your degree purely for the social side
If you've been accepted for the 5 year course, go for it! It is a year that you don't "waste" imho

Pre med is worth doing because in terms of free time to socialise or do whatever you want, it is second to none in this course and every year that comes after it will be incredibly busy. You will most likely find semester 1 of first med a shock to the system, it is very tough going and leaves very little time to breathe (just see the timetable for starters!) And if you're only 18 I'd highly recommend premed, it was the bet year of my life! You especially get more time to meet people from other courses in pre med because your lectures are mixed, as opposed to medicine which are all exclusive to your class, and in the same lecture hall in for two years:(

The bad news is that if they have put you into 1st med automatically it will be very tough to get into pre med because everybody wants to do it. You'd have to plead your case to the school heads with you being unhappy about your grounding in the basic sciences etc etc. Don't even mention the word 'social'!

Don't think of it as 'wasting a year', you're only 18!! :o ANY year of college in ANY course can be a 'waste', it's down to you and how much you put in to it to get back from it.
