    There are a few already

    1. http://www.strava.com/
    2. http://www.abvio.com/cyclemeter/
    3. http://www.endomondo.com/login
    4. http://www.mapmyride.com/

    and probably numerous others.

Most of them do pretty much the same things. If he's just looking for a project then check the above ones out (theyre all available online too) but if he's looking to develop something new that hasnt been done before then he's a bit late.

I use cyclemeter and to be honest there isnt anything else i want it to do that it doesnt do already.

An app that syncs with Strava, letting you know with a very loud noise 10 seconds before a segment is going to commence, and again when it ends, which uses very little of the phone battery power :)

Of course it's possible. Take one fifteen year old into computers, add a computer. Result.

Something to signal the beginning of a segment would be excellent.

Just a tip on Strava's battery use, putting your phone in flight mode dramatically increases the battery life. I used it for the Sean Kellly sportive last weekend. Took me just under 6 hours and I'd say the battery would nearly lasted as long again. The downside of course is that people can't contact you but I rarely notice (or I chose not to notice!) my phone ringing when I'm on the bike anyway.

does airplane mode not kill GPS too?

I can only speak for my own Galaxy S2 but I can have my phone on flight mode and activate GPS at the same time.

Just tried it on my iphone, turned on airplane mode, open strava app and eventhough location services are on the app says no gps found:(

It may well exist already, but maybe an app that shows you the basics of on-the-road maintenance? Lots of people might not repair a puncture all that often so it might be of use or whatever other common problems occur. Granted it'd need to be diagrams rather than video to keep size of app low. I know you could just go on youtube, but that uses data and maybe there's no decent reception up the mountains.

Is it not the case that you just don't get agps mode (assisted gps where it uses the phone network for some info)? Without agps mode, it can take 10-20 mins to get a full sat fix but after that it should be able to do position stuff.

Not just to do with cycling...and maybe it exists already...

...but, alot of people bring their phones on a cycle, but have a lock screen that other people cant unlock - so if they were involved in an accident, they wouldnt be able to access the contact details. So develop a button on the lock screen that can be pressed that takes you to 2 or 3 ICE contacts and allows them to call those contacts on the phone, or at very least, shows them the contact numbers!

Cychosis is a very nice app but it lacks a maintenance schedule - not the same idea as above but it reminded me on how cychosismv
    Can be improved.
