NCT Query

Got the NCT done on my car ten days ago. It failed because of a busted outer CV boot. I was told it would cost 28 euros to get retested. When i asked why the retest wasnt just a visual inspection with no charge i was told that they would have to use a piece of equipment, ie the lift, to check the boot.

I got the car retested today and handed over the money before the test. The tester drove the car just inside the door of the centre, got out and bent down to check the new boot. He then reversed the car out the door, parked it there and came in.

He printed of the cert and handed it to me. When i asked him why he didnt use the lift he said he dint need to for that check. There was two cars in the lane in front of my car, including one on the lift while he ckecked my car. I feel i have been ripped off.

Anyone got any views on this?

Technically if it has to go in the test lane then it is not a visual but in your case it sounds like a piss take. You can always lodge a complaint with the NCTS but I'm not sure how much satisfaction you will get from it.

going by the book he should have used the lift to check it properly,he just didnt bother his arse,ye i'd be making a phone call to the nct complaints department and explaining your case,i'd feel ripped off, they charged you for a "retest" and all they done was a visual which is free

My view is that people will always find something to complain about when it comes to the NCT.

The tester could have made you wait for 20 minutes until a lift was free and then put the car up for a look. Would that have made you feel better?

I was thinking the same thing myself. The tester took a short cut - they shouldn't have, but it benefitted the OP.

the op stated that the tester said he didnt need to put it on the lift,he only looked at it visually, visual inspections are free, his complaint is valid

I always have a lot of time for your views on this forum george but dont agree with you here. I would feel better if i had that 28 quid in my pocket. He did a visual inspection which i feel should have been free.

He did, but he shouldn't have - he should have put the car up on a lift and inspected the cv boot properly. He let his employer down, but (unless the new boot fails) I can't see how you've suffered any loss. Although I do think you have the right to have the boot properly examined to make sure it's ok.

I would have thought the retest should have involved the use of the test lane to verify the alignment. Technically, it could have been altered as a result of the disassembly and reassembly of the suspension during the replacement of the CV Boot.

I thought you would have had to have side slip test done again. No mention of that on nct fail sheet?

I wouldnt have minded paying the fee if he had put in on the lift and checked it thoroughly. He just bent down, looked in and put his hand in. Took 10 seconds max.

Which he should have done. You could go back and complain.

No.Failed because of, Transmission (57) CV boot Frayed/Cut.
Side-slip test passed the first time.

Ah right I suppose the drive having to come back out is not the suspension.

If you complain you wont get anything from it personally. Just be a pain in the arse for you.

The test centre will be warned to use the lift anymore, it was the actions of the individual tester ultimately. If you want it checked properly, i'm sure if you complain they will put it on a lift free of charge, vut whats the point.

They cant refund you the money because that would be admitting there system is wrong and dont need to charge for certain re-tests.

Be glad you got out quick and forget it I say.

By all means go back and they will put it on a lift. They might then find something wrong and send you off again. Quit when you are ahead would be my advice.

    Only re-test what previously failed

your advice is pointless, why would the op want it put on a lift now????? he's got his nct already!!,his gripe is that he was charged for a retest when they carried out a visual, simple as that

As has already been explained several times, the OP's car should have been put on the lift. The OP is therefore entitled to have their cv boot checked on the lift, not to have their money refunded.

It's not up to the Nct tester to decide what to charge you it is 28 euro to retest a cv boot that's a set price. By not using the lift he was doing you a favour I'm sure he could have spend 20 minutes checking it over if you would have preferred. It's not like he was pocketing the money. Nct testers are on a set wage. Your car passed if you didn't want to pay the 28 euro you should have replaced the cv boot before hand as the car was obviously going to fail. Some people just go out to find things to complain about I'm not talking about the op just a general comment.

The tester had his chance to put his car on the lift at the retest and didnt do it. Instead he took the money and only did a visual inspection which should have been free. As for all this "people complain too much" stuff, if service providers did what they are paid to do and didnt cut corners there would be no need to complain.

And you'd be on here moaning about why wouldn't he just have a look at it.

Just thought id update this. I emailed the complaints department about the retest, they looked into it and have refunded the retest fee.In fairness to them there was no hassle getting the refund.
