Access course for school leavers

I'm 18 years old and I did my Leaving Cert this year , unfortunately I didn't get enough points to do Science in NUIG so I applied for the access course in there which will hopefully get me a place next year.
I'm just wondering as I'm new to this , if I'll be able to get any allowence or maybe even a grant for the year?
I read online that I can't get the student grant if I'm doing the access course/ foundation course , I also went to social welfare office and they told me that I can't get any allowence or anything like that.
Is there any chance I could get some financial help for the year as I definitely can't afford to live in Galway on my own cost
?
+ Do any of yous know if I will have to pay for the access course in NUIG?
