Jobs in I.T?

Is it possible for inexperienced people to get jobs in IT in Ireland? I mean the hands on, networking type roles?

I'm 26 and currently working in a job I dislike. While it's permanent and full time, it is shift work, long hours, we're constantly tested and the hours, money and conditions are terrible (60+ hours week). I'm coming up on two years here now and I want to move on. I have zero work life balance and I long for a decent 9-5 job.

I've always loved computers so I'm thinking of retraining (I've no IT qualifications). I know that I'm not cut out for programming, it's more hands-on type work that I'd like. So I was thinking of doing the CCNA course. From what I've learned, many people in this area of IT are required to be jack of all trades types, so maybe I might do some training in database admin/Windows and/or Linux OS. Would this be a good idea?

Since I'd have essentially no experience I know that even with the certs I'd have difficulty getting a job. So getting into helpdesk support might be an option. But how difficult is this in itself? Assuming a starting salary of €20k or thereabouts I'd be taking a very large paycut but I don't mind, if it gets me on the ladder.

Would it be easier to get a helpdesk role with the CCNA behind me? After helpdesk support experience, how difficult would it be to get a networking/deskside support role in a company? Essentially I don't want to have done the CCNA and a Windows or Linux cert only to find they're not worth anything. Or to get a helpdesk role only to find out it is almost impossible to move on. Also, most of the helpdesk roles I've looked at are looking for 2+ years experience aswell. How do people start off in IT if this is the case?

So CCNA>helpdesk>more certs (DB, Windows Etc.)>networking job. Good idea/bad idea?

Honest answer, most certs for most helpdesk roles are useless because you will be trusted with nothing that those certs provide you.

Get the Comptia A+ and N+ certs and Microsoft Office certs(MOS). They cert you up for the starting role, what you do afterwards is up to you. But it is possible to advance when you outshine everybody else.
