should of waited 3 more months and you would of got a year

+1, you should have waited a few weeks.

Look on the bright side, you can test the car 3 months early. Therefore you should be able to test it again in a few weeks, and if it passes now, it "should" pass again easily.

    RING THEM.BE NICE.

When I was in this situation, I did and they gave me a cert for 15 months.... you must have got 3 and a bit months cert I assume , as if you were within the 3 months you would have got 15 months automatically.

You need to bring id, driving licence or passport.

Can I ask if you drove the car to the NCT center with the expired NCT? I am not checking up on you just I have a car that has been off the road and the nice is 11 months out of date. I want to put the car back on the road again and get it nct'ed but someone was telling me that I would have to get the car towed to the center an if I was caught driving it there it would be an automatic 3 points on my licence.

totally wrong...you COULD get up to 5 points if convicted in court for driving a car without an NCT. There is no roadside points allocation for this, it has to go to court and the judge has the discretion to "award" up to 5 points for the lack of a current NCT.
If you are driving the car to an NCT centre ( and have an appointment ) then you are highly unlikely to be prosecuted for having no NCT. Even if you were summonsed for same it is very unlikely that the Judge will prosecute you as you were simply using the car to get to the test centre.

Did you just need ID or did they also want to see proof of ownership? (asking because I just realised I dont have access to mine easily...)

If you will be caught driving a car without NCT it's not automatic points and fine, but it's up to the guard if he want to prosecute you or not.
However legally, you are not allowed to drive your car, even to the NCT centre on the day of the test, if you don't have your NCT up to date.
To be 100% legal, your car must be towed on a towing truck.

Interesting thing here is though, that after towing it to the NCT centre, if you fail your test, you are legally allowed to drive this car until end of the day on which it failed.
So f.e. you can drive it around the garages to obtain quotes for fixing whatever was the reason for failure.

You must have got more than 3 months cert. There is no possibility to get a cert for 3 months or less.

F.e. if you tested your car today (1.09.2012) and you got certificate valid up to 3.12.2012 than it's all right.

But if you didn't do test today and waited few days (say until 4.09.2012) you would get a cert for nearly 15 months (up to 3.12.2013).

    Yes.
After your car fails NCT (and it's not fail dangerous), NCT regulations doesn't apply to this car for the rest of the day.

    Thanks for the info mgbgt1978
I have a car that that I am restoring at the moment, it is a 1999 Dawoo Matiz. It has been off the road for the past 18 months and the NCT expired on 19th Sept 2011. I have almost ready to go so from what I have read the best way to go is the following:
Get the car insured and taxed. Then after the 19th of this month apply for a NCT test. Then assuming it passes, I should get a cert til sept 2013.Would I be correct in assuming all of that?

you will only get it tested from the month and year of car was manafactured so i was told today in the nct centre

As you can do NCT test up to 3 months before due date (which in your case is 19th Sept 2012), then you can apply for test anytime now and you can do it anytime now, and provided it pass, you will get a cert valid up to 19th Sept 2013.

Fair play for restoring Daewoo Matiz ;)

This statement doesn't make any logical sense IMHO.

Your wife wasnt driving it though. I'd imagine its the same as tax. It's up to you, as the driver, to make sure the car your driving is road legal.

Fair enough but someone was pretty insistant about it to me so said I'd ask, anyone know for sure, rather than just giving an opinion? Scared of a big fine cos I'm skint!!
