Koch out---- Edgar v Aldo at UFC 153

This is gonna be some fight! Really tough first fight for Frankie at featherweight. This is gonna be awesome. I'm normally píssed off at changes due to injury but this is a great replacement and it's sure to be a cracker.
    I cannot wait for this!!!

BIG news coming in from USA Today and MMA Junkie, Erik Koch is out of his UFC 153 Featherweight title fight with Jose Aldo, and while this seems like another case of the injury bug derailing another UFC PPV, the replacement fighter is none other than Frankie Edgar.

USA TODAY Sports has learned that an undisclosed injury has forced Erik Koch (13-1, 2-0) to withdraw from a planned UFC 153 title fight with current featherweight champion Jose Aldo (21-1, 3-0), and Edgar has agreed to step into the evening's main event.

"Obviously, we've had a rough couple of weeks here at the UFC, and then sure enough, I walk in to work today, and Erik Koch is hurt," White told USA TODAY Sports. "But Frankie Edgar, being the stud and the warrior that he is, steps up and accepts this fight."

Well you've got your superfight now, MMA fans. With all due respect to the recovering Koch, this is about as huge an upgrade as you can get when the original fight changes due to injury. There will be no warm-up fight for Edgar, he's going straight for Jose Aldo's title on October 13th and he's doing it in Aldo's backyard.

Prediction for this fight is that frankies nose gets broke in the first or second :p like it doesn't happen in every other of his fights. Think footwork is gona be key and frankie has good footwork

this should be awesome, fight of the year coming up

Can't wait. Glad that there's a bit of time between the fight and announcement, too. UFC have been blowing (or attempting to blow) big money matches due to injury for a while now. Sonnen/Bisping should've had months of hype and Sonnen/Jones would've been happening tomorrow if Dana had had his way (denying us months of Sonnen in his element).

This is pretty much the fight in the Featherweight Division. Glad we get a while to soak it up and look forward to it.

As above, can't decide who to root for in this one.

It's sure to be an absolutely smashing match up with at least FOTN written all over it.

When you said Koch out I thought it was more of a request. This is looking like another great Brazilian card.

The roof will blow off the place if Aldo ko`s frankie and storms the crowd again.

Great fight. I actually think Edgar is still at a size disadvantage funnily enough.

I like Aldos style but his outrageous fence grab against Mendes still sticks in my craw!:o

Yeah I've heard that Aldo walks around at close to 170:eek:
Edgar would be used to fighting bigger guys at this stage anyway.

Aldo will absolutely smash him frankie gets hit waaaaay to easy. Unless aldo has bad weight cut and tires himself out punching frankie in the face cant see frankie having much of a chance

People also thought Mark Hominick didn't stand a chance. Look how that turned out.
Hominick pounded Aldo and very nearly got the win.
I'd never count Frankie out of a fight.

Hominick got destroyed for four rounds, iirc were at least 1 10-8 round and then aldo got tired --> See my comment about the bad weight cut ;) Apparantly he had a nightmare of 1 for that fight!

Ah yeah I know Aldo won convincingly and he dominated for most of the fight. The point I was making was Hominick came back strong in the final round and dominated while on top of Aldo. So it can be done. And with Edgar's wrestling, if he can take Aldo down and keep him there, he can do serious damage.
I just think its foolish to write off Frankie in this fight.

Aldo Edgar is just amazing... a speed, footwork, timing masterclass can't wait... Aldo just hits so cleanly and has more power and finishing ability than Edgar... but... I wouldn't count Edgar out.. if he's twitchy and jumpy and circles cleverly and gets in and out he could catch Aldo and finish him in the latter rounds.. but he'll probably try wrestle. I reckon he should keep it on the feet and take Aldo head on!

Card looks amazing.. look who they got on it

    Aldo
    Edgar
Quintin Jackson (may have completely lost it but still
    Texeira
    Fitch
    Eric (massive 170 potential) Silva
    Maia
    Story
    Tibau
    Gonzaga
    Luiz Cane

    freakin awesome card...

Jackson vs Texeira has one punch knockout written all over it and a win for Glover brings him much closer to the top guys.. deserved or not...but he is a scary scary man

Eric Silva has a really tough test in John 'sit on top of you and wear you down' fitch.... Silva is class

Davis v Prado take 2 could be war.. striker/wrestler classic... Prado could kick the legs off a dinosaur!

Maia v Story - brains vs brawn... very intriguing match-up... Rick Story is some tough mf you need to bring a grenade to beat him... he's kinda crap in a way but he'll still beat your face in coz he's just so ridiculously tough a la Leben but better

great card IMO ! can't wait

    +1 on Erick Silva.
The guy is an animal. I can see him ko'ing Fitch very early.

    how's this for a match-up ....

Eric Silva 14-2 active 7 yrs

    and

Rory McDonald 13-1 active 7 yrs - just started fighting 4 years younger

that, I'd like to see. Two great contender prospects... both of them animals... McDonald is probably the better but

both of them have been taking their career quite slowly and patiently and both with high level skills on the feet and the ground... Rory with the better wrestling and Silva possibly craftier with the submissions! Penn and Fitch are going down and this is gona happen next year I reckon... only coz it should!

    http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Rory-MacDonald-14018

    http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Erick-Silva-15009

just came into me head there but feck it I found an article on it..

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1215385-rory-macdonald-or-erick-silva-who-is-the-better-ufc-prospect
    _______________________

With a first-round submission win at UFC on FX 3 over wrestling powerhouse Charlie Brenneman, Erick Silva cemented his status as one of the best up-and-coming fighters in all of MMA and threw his hat into the Octagon for consideration as a future UFC welterweight champion.

While there are few that would question Silva's status as a top-notch prospect, there is at least one man who would raise an eyebrow at hearing proclamations of Silva's destiny to become champion.

That man's name is Rory MacDonald, and he is another fighter with designs on the welterweight throne.

At 31 years of age, current welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is far from over the hill. He is certainly not an old man, and his dominant wrestling and advanced striking skills have allowed him to avoid taking too much damage to this point in his career, which means that he is not ready step aside and let Silva and MacDonald pick his bones clean.

But, GSP has spent the last year rehabbing a knee injury, which threatens to mitigate his future success.

Whether it comes sooner or later, St-Pierre will eventually lose or retire his welterweight championship, and when that day comes, there is a strong chance that it will pass either directly or through a third party to either Silva or MacDonald.

My question to all you readers is this: Who is more likely to take the torch from St-Pierre and become the next great welterweight champion?

Before answering, here are some things to consider.

Who will have a better career
    Rory MacDonald
    Erick Silva
    Both are overrated
It will be a back and forth battle forever more
Submit Vote vote to see results
Silva (27) has five years on MacDonald (22), though their fight experience is relatively equal: The Brazilian has 16 professional fights to his name, the Canadian has 14.

Each fighter has been defeated only a single time (One of Silva's losses came via disqualification in a fight he had all but won.), though Silva has never been stopped.

Silva owns a finishing rate of 79 percent, while MacDonald tops that with 92 percent.

The majority of Silva's wins have come by submission, though he has exhibited some very deadly striking during his time as a UFC fighter.

MacDonald has scored six knockouts, six submissions and one decision. Though MacDonald owns a more balanced record than Silva, both fighters are very well rounded.

One could make the argument that Silva's striking has looked superior to MacDonald's during each fighter's time in the UFC, as the former has floored all of his opponents with strikes, whereas MacDonald has been clipped hard by Che Mills and Michael Guymon and was stopped by Carlos Condit.

But, on the other hand, MacDonald does own twice the knockout stoppages that Silva has.

Arguments could be made either way for the grappling advantage, as both guys are very dangerous on the mat. Silva displayed an aggressive sweep-and-submission game in his recent win over Charlie Brenneman, while MacDonald has shown a methodical yet effective approach on the ground over his last several contests.

Perhaps the largest discrepancy in skill lies in wrestling, where MacDonald holds a firm advantage. Silva handled Brenneman's relentless takedowns quite well, but that does not put him on MacDonald's level.

Still, each fighter is very well rounded, very dangerous and very likely to be a key factor in the future of the welterweight division.

But which fighter will rise above the other?

    Ah FFS!!
2012 will forever be known as the year of the injury. What a disaster.

So what now? Edgar fights somebody else for the interim title? Or just a no.1 contender fight?
I would say Edgar v Korean Zombie but he's out after surgery. Maybe Poirier??

I think an interim title is terrible here (even though I normally don't mind interims).
If Edgar wins the interim, he becomes the 3rd ever person to win titles in two divisions. It makes it a totally hollow achievement. It's Aldo or nobody in that division.

At 170, the interim was more like an official 170 contender belt. Sure, Conduit is the champ officially, but not really. If Edgar becomes a two division champ, then I'd like to see it happen in the proper fashion.

Absolutely, it depends on the length of time Aldo is out injured. I wouldn't be surprised if they do create an interim though just because Frankie is such a company man.

Deserve what though. It's at 205, not a MW title fight. It's a late event-saver basically.

Maldonado is in against Teixeira too.

Heard a rumour that the UFC tried to make Anderson Silva vs Wanderlei as it's in Brazil but Wandy turned it down. Could be crap. But allegedly Bonner was supposed to step in against Teixeira but when Wandy refused Anderson they offered it to Bonner instead.

Pretty cool of Silva to opt into this, certainly it will ensure the event will still be a success in Brazil anyway.

Ah, didn't realise it was at 205.
Bizarrely, I really like that match-up.

    Maldonado vs Glover?

Makes no sense, Maldonado got beat by Kingsbury and Glover absolutely destroyed Kingsbury after. Rashad should have stepped in or if not Bonnar vs Glover and Rashad vs Silva makes a whole lot more sense.

Silva just took an easy fight in my eyes.

Surely they could have got something a bit more relevant, it's a joke match up imo. I'm steadily starting to lose interest in the UFC, injury after injury to top guys, the constant shuffling of cards and now these fights that nobody wanted to see.

On another note Silva fights so rarely its such a waste getting him to fight Bonnar (notwithstanding that I do like Bonnar, he's a true fighter, but this isn't the fight for him) when we've got a very competitive challenger at 185, Weidmann needs to take a leaf out of the Chael P. Sonnen book and get himself that title shot.

Edit: Just to point out that I do realise that the injury problem isn't the fault of the UFC, but that's by the by when it comes to actual interest

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 813 ✭✭✭Shazbot

Maldonado vs Glover makes no sense. Maldonado is 1-2 in the UFC on a 2 fight losing streak against a hyped prospect for 205. I thought they might have Glover fight Gustafson.

Silva vs Bonnar isn't exactly a fight I'd be dying to see but it should be entertaining at least. I predict a beat down similar to Silva vs Griffin.

Dana seemed to have a pop at Jones again when announcing the changes.
This is old-school UFC. A card is in jeopardy, but guys that are world champions and superstars stepped up and jumped in and saved the card. This is why the fans love this sport and why we went on a 12-year run without canceling an event."

There were a lot of rumors flying about. Cerrone and McCall offered to fight Edgar. Edgar could have taken on a top featherweight like Korean Zombie or Mendes to justify a title shot.

I think this fight is also a bit for Bonnar who retired unless he would get a decent fight. Got Vlad, them he got injured.

Bonnar is going to beat Anderson and retire as the only man to hold wins over Jones and Silva.

Jones spinning elbow to Bonner's scone is part of the new UFC PPV intro. I was in Vegas for that fight, fantastic card.

Bonner may become the only man to get his ass kicked by both though?

Because it is late notice. They would need a lot more notice for the five round distance.

Terrible fight but Bonnar does deserve a big fight though.

True enough. I suppose it is only a month away.

Definitely agree Bonnar deserves a good fight. I always liked him and he has the heart of a lion. Even though he was never the greatest fighter in the world, I don't think he ever got the credit he deserved.

“Silva called to say ‘Hey Boss, I’ll fight at 205 and save the show in Las Vegas on 8 days notice’ but it was a few hours too late. So when this happened, I called him up and he stepped up and said ‘Absolutely, I’ll fight. I only have 3 weeks to make 185 and can’t do that right now. But I will fight at 205.’ And I thought, ‘How can I find someone at 205 willing to fight him when we couldn’t find at 205 willing to fight Jon Jones on a month’s notice?’

“Then I get a call from Stephan Bonnar and he is pumped. He says that Silva is the perfect style for him and he wants this fight more than anything. Does this fight make sense? Of course it doesn’t. But the bottom line is that Anderson and Bonnar stepped up.”

    - DW talking about the event on a show today.

    Man makes a fair point

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,326 ✭✭✭MartyMcFly84

At first I thought it was a joke. But the more I think about it the more I am excited about watching this.

Bonnar will want to go out with a bang and bring the fight to Silva. Its going to be great chance to see some Spider magic. As he is 37 now there are not that many opportunities left to see him at the Matrix level.

I know the fight is a bit irrelevant in terms of rankings, but its certainly going to be a fun fight to watch.

I not sure who else at 205 they offered it too, but it seems by Dana's comments there was not too many jumping at the bit to mix it up with Anderson on a months notice.
