Well, someone had to set this poll eventually... :D;)

    *puts on Steely Dan*

Of the five Reeling In The Years series, which one do you think is the best?

Might it be the '60s, with almost everything in black and white? Or the '70s, with big hair and so many genres of popular music?

Or the '80s, the first one, with generally bad fashion? Or even the '90s, despite it being made awfully soon after the end of that decade?

I've included the 2000s too - even though it also came too soon after that decade ended, and (in my opinion anyway) simply didn't have quite the same amount of love and care put into it as the other four.

This poll will run forever - even after RTE makes Reeling In The 2010s (in 2020, no less)... :D:D;);)

What do you think is the best Reeling in the Years series? 36 votes

    1960s

    1970s

    1980s

    1990s

    2000s

I just wish they'd stop showing it again and again and again....

Great thread. Owing to the music i prefer the 70s although i loved the 80s series too. The only series i didnt like was the noughties, i suppose its because its very fresh in memory

I never get tired of them, to be honest. Great stuff.

Except for the 2000s, which has things like Mary Harney's Wedding and David Beckham moving to LA Galaxy. They should be wiped and never spoken of again.

    80's!

And Enya was a superstar, she was in a good few of the episodes

Nowadays you don't hear much about her except about her huge wealth

1981, it's one of the first clips they used and then they used the song for the next few minutes.
It worked extremely well, bualadh bos to the editors

1978 had one of my favourite songs of all time played on it.

I'd go with the 70's, only because the old man makes an appearance in 1971. A Week In The Life Of Martin Cluxton.

Seriously though, it is probably the only thing on RTE I could watch over and over again.
    Great programme.

2001. Using Pyramid Song for the collapse of the Twin Towers genuinely sent shivers down my spine. Excellent stuff by the editors.

I'll have to go for the 80s as its the decade where I first became conscious of the news and what was happening in the world.

Watching the major events of the decade unfold on RITY brings back memories of how I first heard them as a child in the early 80s. Things like the Hunger Strikes, The Stardust Disaster and the Brighton Bomb.

I remember seeing an RTÉ news bulletin on TV covering the latter before heading out the door to school and thinking how odd it was that the news was on so early.

We only had RTÉ 1 & 2 back then and they didn't usually begin before 9am on weekdays.

In the Summer, RTE2 often didn't start until about 6pm

I like the oldest RITYs the best, some of the archive clips they show are great.

They are excellent at picking the music to suit the event. Its always so apt.

So, 28 votes so far and almost half of them have been for the '80s... ;)

My own vote has gone to the '70s - not just because of the big hair and the many genres of popular music, but also because of the transition of the clips from mostly black-and-white in 1970 to just about all in colour in 1979. Expected, of course, but fun all the same.

Also, it's hard to get tired of the lighter clips from that decade - especially '79, with the failure of Guinness Light, Eamonn Andrews surprising Gaybo on the 500th Late Late, and Pat Spillane on Superstars. ;)

No disrespect intended, but could you please give some sort of a reason?;)

I think the 60s to the 80s have been the best. The newer versions don't yet have the nostalgia value. I thought it was a shame to air the 2010 edition before 2010 had even ended.

They finished at 2009 (which was Broadcast in 2010)

I think the last series (2000-2009) didn't resonate with the Public like the older shows did. They should wait until 2020 before doing RITY 2010. Just keep showing the repeats until then :)

The 80s by a long shot..

1987-1989 in particular. I think the 80s was the best to have as the original series too.
