Did I get flashed by a Speed Cam?

Last weekend I was driving down the Dublin quays near the Guinness brewry at around 12:30am. I was following this taxi and was doing around 50-60kmph. It was absolutely empty street and not one single person follows the 30kmph speed limit on the quays. Well, as I get close to Heuston, I see this flash. I was following behind the taxi so I don't know if it flashed at me or the taxi but I can say I was going a wee bit faster than the taxi.

It took me a while to figure out the flash came from this white van parked by the river. It was completely white with no stickers or marking or anything. Black tinted windows, you could see a camera in the back window and there was like a video screen on the dash board.

I thought all the speed camera vans where those brightly coloured vans or atleast had the camera sign on them. This van had absolutely nothing. So should I be expecting a letter in the post with a speeding ticket in it??

And isn't the 30kmph speed limit on the quays a bit ridiculous considering no one ever does 30kmph on the quays...?!

I think a recent thread in here said that the unmarked camera vans are traffic cams, or something like that.

we should have a "know your speed cameras" sticky thread.

The unmarked vans are Garda speed vans, the marked ones are the Go-Rape vans.

Quiet likely you'll have a bit of post soon with two nom alcoholic pints :( . Go safe do have unmarked vans used for "survey" which do sometimes issue tickets and I know someone who's in dispute with the who got a ticket from one of these survey vans but he happened to have a dash cam showing the unmarked van that done him. Anyway back to point, the camera system fitted to the go safe vans use a infra red flash ( that box thing you see over the door on the back) which you won't see flash. However the Garda vans do flash so my guess is that it was one of them and thier vans are plain jobs with no real telltale signs.

Unfortunately I think so. Garda vans are white & unmarked. They are also always where you were flashed.

The quay along Guinness is a frequent spot for the unmarked Garda Van's. I'm always careful going along there, usually see at least one a week. Also, it's 50Kph along Victoria Quay.

Could it get me even when i was following not too far behind this taxi? I'm not sure if it got me or the taxt... But i do think i was going faster... Although i wasn't doing any more than 60kmph...

Also do i need to tell the insurance people that i got points for speeding if i do get them?

Yup, it shouldn't affect your policy if its your only 2.

You can get 4 penalty points without it affecting your policy AFAIK. I had 4 and declared them to my insurance company on the 2 separate occasions and it didn't make a difference.

The Quays are 50 km/h near Guinness (limit changes from 30 km/h before Dublin corpo just as SgtBob told above) so depending on how much under indicated 60 you were you might just escape the fine.

How long does it take for the ticket to arrive?
Didn't get one so far so hoping I got away with it...

Having said that, one of the lads in work informed his insurance company of his first 2 points, they automatically charged him 150 quid! Which I thought was crazy.

I have seen a red speed camera van across the road from the St James gate entrance on the quays a few times. The motorbike cops have been checking speed from the entrance a few times too.
