    Hi,

I have had a few things on my mind for a long time now and when I hear about how this company is now running and treating their staff I finally have to say something.

I have worked for Rigney Dolphin and it was the most soul destroying experience of my entire life. I think it is absolutely despicable how they treat people and get away with it.

Rigney Dolphin is an outsourcing company that was originally based in Waterford IDA and has now expanded with offices in Derry and Dublin. It takes contracts from big companies, hires staff at minimum wage and with very poor training has them take Customer Service, Technical Support and HSE calls (Even though it has been publicly denied that the HSE is outsourced).

The best way I can think of to describe Rigney Dolphin Waterford is a western sweatshop. And that is no exaggeration. All industries are suffering because of the current economic situation but it is disgusting to see big companies like this making profits by taking advantage of people trying to make a living.

Mismanagement of this company has lead to huge turnover and lack of support that have caused people to acquire the affects of depression, anxiety and severe mental breakdown.

It was once said in the local media that Rigney Dolphin had one of the highest employment figures in Waterford City. Lies!!! Yes they have a huge staff base but no they are not keeping people employed. They are hiring people on temporary contracts and before people can get a chance to become permanent workers and reap the benefits of being employed, they are letting that group of people go and hiring another group to do that exact same job. I have seen people hired and trained and 3 months later there is another class training to replace them the following week. This is not helping any unemployment issues, it is simply a way they can work the system without any consideration for the impact this is having on peoples lives.

I have seen people being so cold that they have had to bring hot water bottles to work and wear their coat, scarf and gloves all day.

I have heard managers being abusive to people that are terrified to speak up for themselves because they are terrified of losing their job.

I have seen grown men and women reduced to tears and be pushed back to work with no support.

I have seen positions and ranks being made invalid with very little notice.

There has been a pay freeze for about 4 years and the 5 directors have the cheek to pay themselves over €600,000 a year combined.

I feel it is hard to get this point across as it is something that I would imagine being difficult to fully comprehend without experiencing or seeing it but I hope I have shamed them because it is all I can do but not even half of what they deserve.

Rigney Dolphin has humiliated, frightened and destroyed a lot of people and I would like everyone to know how bad it really is.

i work in retail and I see most of that every day, I'm afraid.

    Is there a union?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2 jen4861

No there is no union unfortunately. That is probably the main problem really....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,503 ✭✭✭thefinalstage

Unions do nothing in general except side with the company. They are only useful when it is in their interest to do so. In my current job there has been a pay freeze on these minimum wage jobs for years now. With higher work loads. The only way to deal is to not care.

I used to work there and found the place depressing. I actually had to motivate myself to go work every day just so i could walk through the doors. The training was insufficient and then when errors were made i was made feel like an idiot. There is no respect for the employees and would agree that it can be compared to a sweat shop with all there rules for break times or logging in or out if you were a few mins late at all they would come down on the staff with warnings and one to ones which i found to be a joke and did not motivate the staff at all.

When i was there they had that pay freeze and were sticking with min wage and that appears to still be the case and i now hear that they are in full swing letting go of most of the staff, people who have stuck through the 3 months of soul destroying pain with their temporary contracts in there with the glimmer of hope of securing a job so they can pay the bills in the future, but at least the top cats are getting their bonuses and big pay slips for running the company like a sweat shop. They think that because most of the staff that they get from the WIT will take anything to get some money together just so they can get through college and then wonder why the have such a massive staff turnover.

Best of luck to people that are still there but hopefully ye can find jobs in the future that doesn't make you feel sick in the stomach when the alarm goes off in the morning for work

Jen4861 i bet you got fired and this is the reason why you are writing this thing about your last job. If you did your job right in the first place you wouldn't be on this trying to ruin your old jobs name.

I had been working there for years and i never heard of a managers being abusive to people that are terrified to speak up for themselves because they are terrified of losing their job.

This part is about the hot water bottle, people being so cold that they have had to bring hot water bottles to work and wear their coat, scarf and gloves all day this is when we had the snow. Whenever it was cold on the floor all you had to do was ask and they would turn on the heat.

Can you please advise how long you have worked here because what i can tell you only worked there a few months and got sacked.

I had never a problem with any of the managers in there.

All call centres are like this. I worked in AOL and we were treated like dirt when it was taken over by TalkTalk. I would never work in a call centre ever again. 8 years is enough for anybody.

Beat me to it, well minus the sherlock holmes cartoon.

Always Dubious when 1st time posters who just happened to join today, post to call someone a liar.

Well I for one believe the OP and I know other people who have worked there and there are loads of posts on that particular company on this site. Funnily enough they are always defended by first time posters.

I have to say that of all the places I have worked in my life, working in RD was soul-destroying. It is the only job that I had where it actually didn't matter how good you were at your job - you were just a number at the end of the day and therefore disposable. You are actually treated like a child and whilst I never saw a Manager abusing a member of staff, it is actually far more insidious than that - you can do really well on your quality scores and call handling times and yet they still find something to get you on. Bear in mind that the majority of the customers that you are dealing with are angry and even abusive at times yet there is no recognition of this nor any sort of support when this happens.

As with most people, you can handle the angry and abusive calls most of the time but there is always going to be the day when it really gets to you and there is no lattitude or understanding at all when this happens.

I cannot agree about the place being cold - all you had to do was say that it was too hot or too cold and the temperature was adjusted. The canteen was run by some great people but it was expensive for what it offered.

In my experience, it actually takes very little to motivate people - simple things like being valued for the job you do, a little understanding when things can and do go wrong, and being treated like an adult instead of a 12 year old.

What the Managers and those higher up don't understand is that it is the people that you work with that actually make the job bearable and apart from the fact that it's a job, they are the motivation for you to go to work everyday. It is truly the team around you that support you and help you get through your difficult days!

I worked for Vodafone, however my payslip came from Rigney Dolphin Dundalk. Disgraceful operation. Neither they, Vodafone nor the Irish government cared about low-paid staff. It was only for 6 months but it was enough to ensure I will never become a Vodafone customer and I will never have anything to do with any sham of an organisation that seeks to circumvent employee rights.
People wonder about two-tier Ireland: the people who the system is there for and the people it's there to screw. Frank Dolphin, Micheal Martin, Enda Kenny, Michael Noonan.. all those horrendous bastards. A gallows needs to be erected outside Leinster house to take care of this lot.

Lets face facts no one working there will tell the truth cause there hanging on for the place to close which is the rumour doining the rounds.
I stood up for my self so the re interviewed for my job and let me go. 13 other were let go with me they are slave drivers last week they called into a meeting with the ceo>owner off the company beggin us to help him get new were all in this together. i meet a girl last week who was on set hours 9 to 5 they were taken away from and when she was in a rotation that she made work for her they changed her again to set hours of 1 till 9 so as they could force her to leave.

IT IS A FACT IF YOU TELL THEM SOME THING DOES NOT SUIT YOU WITH IN A MONTH YOU WILL BE ON THEM HOURS FACT. They are making it impossible for people to stay

yes i am annoyed i was let go and if still had a job i would not say this only to keep my job ask any body working there!!

i have to agree and disagree with some of the"facts" on this thread.

is it a great place to work?. in short the answer is no! But it is not the worst either..

For one, the wages are way too low for the work you do. there are some people on more than one campaign, 2 even three different campaigns and others doing the jobs of 2 people, all for min wage.

eg They took away the role of team captains and reduced wages to CSR rates however the guys are still doing the same work as a team captain as well as their own CSR job. If it was me, i would not do both but i understand that if they don't they risk loosing their job so it is a no win situation really.

Now lets look at the wages, IMO they took advantage of the economic climate and installed a pay freeze, meanwhile the directors receive over €600,000. I know everybody would like to earn more but if you think about it no one really calls a support centre if they are happy, it is going to be about incorrect invoices or handsets not working etc. so you are dealing with alot of unhappy people, on top of this you are pressured into resolving theissue in a certain amount of time and after a call you have about 30 seconds to tie up everything and than it’s on to the next call. Heaven forbid you spend more than 30 seconds in wrap as you will have someone jump on you straight away. my point been it can be a lot of stress for a little amount of money. In my opinion this job is worth about €10.50/11 an hour but hey i could be a little biased here :)J

Morale in there is also at an all time low, when i first joined the company, in the days of meteor, there was a buzz around the placeand always something going on or something to talk about. Nowadays the talk is all about who is leaving next, or who's hours are been cut. the place is just completely lifeless. I don't mean to be critical but it took a notable nosedive when the new management and structural changes took place. Just to give you a couple of examples of how bad it is gone. they recently tried to organise a night out in jack meades to boast morale, and they could not even organise that properly. not only did they cancel the night but they did not even notify people that they had cancelled and i know some of my mates had made arrangements to stay down for the night. Now how is that supposed to boast morale!

However it's not all doom and gloom, i know i don't paint a good picture but i enjoy my job, i work with a great team and have made somegreat friends over the years. I have never heard managers been abusive to anyone, sure some of them can be ,lets just say direct, and some of the higher up managers can be quite intimidating but they are by no means the worst i have ever seen and i would say that 99% of management are on the ball. Including frank himself, who i must say is always in there with a smileon his face and seems very friendly and approachable.

Sometimes it can be too hot/ cold in the mornings, but it is true that all you have to do is ask and the air con or heating will be turned on, In fact i remember last year when the air con broke and they brought in an ice cream van for the agents until they got it sorted. The same with the ulster bank situation, i had friends who work elsewhere and their employers basically said tough, it is not their problem, however rigney went out of their way to sort it for us and paid us from another bank, These are just little things but they really do make a big difference.

So in short the place has its good points and bad points just like any other work place but when people are been let go at short notice and hours are been cut, it does not look well and does not give anyone any confidence or security that they will have a job a couple of weeks down the line. it does seem that when they decide to combine positions and re interview,it is the person who is there the longest who is getting left go. so if they do that to their loyal staff, everyone else cannot help but feel like a number in the place. Personally i think the company is in decline and i can see them focusing more on their Derry and Dublin sites. I hope i’m wrong but sure only time will tell

I myself worked there for a few years and at one stage i asked for the AC to be turned on heat countless of times and with no reply i eventually had to move desk. This place is soul destroying. Anyone who worked there will know this. And yes i have whitenessed a certain manger (no names mentioned) being extremely abusive with other employees, and i know my self first hand with that. So obviously by you sticking up for Rigney Dolphin, your clearly a manager of some sort in there. Some one who got good treatment .
