Is there room here for Prog Rock here?
It's certainly a sub genre of Rock but it's hard to tell if it was a precursor to certain parts of Classic rock.

I think the band "Traffic" would fall under Prog. Rock. Their music was very diverse. They definitely deserve a mention. Here is one of my favourite songs by them.

Prog rock gets a really hard, especially from the trending jurno types but I've really grown to appreciate the sheer ambition of alot of the bands. There were pushing things forward. Anyone trying to do something new runs the risk of looking a bit foolish in hindsight. I got Rick Wakeman's journey to the centre of the earth recently for €3. It completely ridiculous but really enjoyable. Yeah its a bit silly, but it's never bland. It's not snow patrol.

Old thread, I know, but I've been pondering the "what is progressive?" question for some time now. In the "review the song" thread in the Rock & Metal forum, I posted a new Rush song, and the comment was "they should stick to what they're good at". Now there's someone who doesn't get (a) Rush and (b) Progressive Rock in general! :P

There have been some "prog" bands who fixated on particular sounds and recreated them, e.g. the way early Marillion sometimes sounded like a clone of early Genesis. They progressed beyond that, but other bands didn't e.g. IQ, Jadis. I don't really consider those truly Progressive bands: it's "prog" as a style, not a genuinely Progressive attitude.

Conversely, there are bands who would never call themselves "prog" but who do have some of that attitude. Muse are happy to acknowledge their influences (Queen, Rush etc.), but I remember Thom from Radiohead explicitly saying that he wants nothing to do with the "progressive" label. Well, I can't listen to Paranoid Android without being impressed by how progressive it is, even if it doesn't strongly remind of any particular band. Maybe a bit of Red-era King Crimson at a push.)

For a good example of new progressive music, I can recommend Steven Wilson, particularly The Raven That Refused To Sing. He's up to his elbows in prog history - he's been remixing albums by Yes and King Crimson, and for the album he actually used the Mellotron that was on the first King Crimson album, recorded at Robert Fripp's house. I particularly like Luminol, which has some solid Yes, Pink Floyd and Genesis references, but doesn't really sound like any of those bands at all, in my opinion. The past is a great source of inspiration, but it shouldn't hold you back - that wouldn't be Progressive, would it? :cool:
