Ireland: Fiscally Conservative, Socially Liberal?

I know AH is not representative of the whole of Ireland but if I could, I'd like to tell of an opinion I've formed while on these forums. As far as I can see, it seems most people are wise about their money and that believe we should not be getting into any debt which is then thrown on the backs of the ordinary person in the street and their families. So we agree that government should only spend on what it receives.

As well as this, it seems most people are in favour or more civil liberties, marijuana legalisation, that sex between two adults for money should not be a crime and that two people regardless of sex should be allowed marry.

If this is so - then why doesn't Ireland have "representatives" that represent the people? Do we as a people just not care enough? What is it? I find it hard to believe that what the government are engaged in is what the people of this country actually want. Am I off?

    But I think we do

    FG represent fiscal conservatism
    Labour represent social liberalism

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

What have Fine Gael done to espouse fiscal conservatism in the last year and a half? They're afraid to touch the 750 quangos but raise taxes to support more?

And Labour - these are engaged in internet censorship among other things. Only a religious fundamentalist would consider them socially liberal. I am asking this because I ma genuinely interested..as far as I'm concerned, none of the parties represent what people think they do.

    Simple AH's answer.
    Boards demographic is young.
    Voting demographic is old.

But surely the younger demographics see whats coming and have some kind of motivation to get involved? Do people think that sitting back is going to do squat...
