Hi all,we've been plagued by rats the last few weeks and I'm thinking of using my mink traps to sort it out as we live in an estate so shooting aint an option. I've trapped many mink over the years but never rats. My terrier got a few but the traps might be a quieter way. Just wondering what bait is best?

Some bread with the oil from a fryer or oil off a frying pan works well as rat bait

Cheap tins of smelly dog food and peanut butter have worked for me in the past on a friends farm yard. I was shooting them with an air rifle but I imagine it'll work for a trap too

As mentioned chocolate spread or cooked bacon (rashers), good luck catching them. Wish more people would.

Get yourself a few fenn traps. Theyre about €12 each but will last forever. Build some tunnels from plywood about 1.5ft long and just wide enough to hold the trap. Rats cant pass up the opportunity to explore new places like that as do mink and stoats. Also this will mean you dont catch any cats or dogs which may belong to neighbours in your estate.

As bait I normally use a bit of dog food. The canned food is best and the cheaper the better. Get a can for about 50c or 80c in Tesco or Lidls and that will feed about 5 fenn traps at least. It will stink and the rats will go crazy for it.
Another deadly bait is cat food that contains fish or you can use a tin of salmon and sprinkle the juice around the trap. I myself use mainly live multiple catch traps around the estate as I use my fenn traps for squirrels and mink.

You could always dry mix some hardwall and bran flakes. Put it in pipes and leave it where it wont get wet.

I agree! If your serious about getting rid of a rat problem, then poison is the most effective method!
Saying that, if you want to go the trap route, a really good bait is dried cooked onion, which can be got in Lidle/Aldi, cant remember which! Comes in a box, and has a really strong smell that rat's/mice love!!

Get a ferret and even let it walk around the smell of a ferret around and the rats won't be around
My mate has pigeons and had rats and I brought down my big buck I had last year and he caught 3 rats but the smell off him kept the rest of them away
