Personally I'd find that a bit underpowered with a 1.9tdi engine but that's just a personal opinion

Lovely gearbox, makes the TDI so much better, traded one in years ago and loved it.

Only downside is that they have a very bad reputation and I wouldnt touch one with a 10ft pole.

    CVT box. Bah!

It's a lovely gearbox with the diesel though, on acceleration at low revs it gives you the 'my clutch is slipping!' feeling, then the torque comes in

It's actually faster than the 6 speed manual.

Cheers for the info colm. Had read a few horror stories alright. Are the really that dodgy if gearbox oil is done when it should?

Multitronics must have had 40k mile ATF changes.

Audi replaced many multitronic clutches with an upgraded one - maybe check if this has been done?

I wouldn't buy a multitronic with an engine bigger than this. I have a 2.0 petrol multitronic coming up to 100k miles and not a hint of trouble (yes I realise this statement will mean it falls to bits next week). At its best it's like having an electric transmission.

If you test drive the car check for jerks and clunks when moving from N-D, and N-R in particular.

Good to hear it. Yeah he took it for a spin earlier no noises from it. So fingers crossed!

What age and mileage is it?

A6 is a great car for cruising, and if you have a relaxed driving style the multitronic box will suit it perfectly.

Lot of value in a used A6, but they don't fit on my drive!

It's a 05. Old shape. 92k miles. And the driver in his 60s so relaxed style all the way!

.....'sfunny you should reference being smooth : I know someone with an 09 A6 2.0 Tdi, and at 44k kms (!), the Multitronic is toast. Curious thing, though, is he's NOT smooth with it - never has been.

Like anything else - with some mechanical sympathy it might be grand. If the thing isn't 1000% smooth, esp as mentioned on the N-D and N-R shift, run as fast as your little manual gearbox will carry you.

Now, if you could find an A6 or Skoda with the 'ol fashioned Tiptronic box, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

+1 - mind you, it does depend on just how cheap it is: at the right price........and I mean really cheap, enough to allow for buying a new box if required.......

Currently looking at a 1.8T A4 with the multitronic. According to the owner the box was replaced by Audi. Were newer ones significantly better?

Never owned an Auto so not sure what to expect.
