on ads for new guns,it sometimes says 'can also run on CO2'.is this the case for most pistols?what would you need aside from getting a CO2 mag?or can anyone say if it would be possible or indeed wise to convert a KJW M9?

It is not a case of a converting it to CO2 it all depends if the pistol has CO2 compatible magazines available its more of an option really. Some brands do have CO2 mags some don't.

CO2 runs at a higher pressure than green gas, naturally the higher the PSI the more stress the pistol is under so the more likelyhood of wear and tear, CO2 also tend to dry up seals quicker as it does lubricate them like green gas would.

most pistols won't take both, the best example of one pistol taking both would probably be the M9. most M9's can take CO2 and gas, however only the CO2's ones can take both while the gas ones can only take green gas mags. in order for a pistol to take CO2 it needs to have reinforced parts, KJW usually use red or blue nozzles to show reinforced parts capable of taking both, also some 1911's take both too, same thing though.
