i ran a 5 mile road race last night. After looking at my gps splits after getting home i realised i broke my 5k pb for the first 5k of the 8k race. Can i count this as my new 5k pb or does a 5k only count for that distance ?

Was there a starter pistol? :D

Formal: A PB is acceptable if there is a chip-mat at the specific distance, which confirms your time. Example: Haile Gebrselassie's 30km world record during the 2009 Berlin Marathon.

In-formal: A PB is whatever the hell you want it to be, whether it's in training, a part of a race, or running loops around your house. Just bear in mind, that if the first 5km of the race were down-hill, it's going to be tough to beat your new 5km PB. Also, if you're relying on the Garmin for your splits, the Garmin is accurate to at best 5%, so without an official report of your time, it could be out by 20-30 seconds (guess).

Thanks krusy there was about 1k downhill at the start and then a tough climb from 3 -5.Use a nike gps watch was accurate by 2 secs to the course clock/Race results so should be ok.

Sure, I don't see why not, unless of course it was an Olympic/World Championship qualifying time or a ridiculous net downhill first 5km. You're only fooling yourself if it's too good to be true :D

The time that the watch recorded is irrelevant, the GPS measures distance.

Did your GPS record that the 8k race was 7.8k, 8k or 8.2k ? All within the GPS margin of error.

It might be that when your GPS declared that you had run 5k, that you had only run 4.9k or 4.8k.

It is the fastest time that you have run 5K, but you cant be sure that it was actually 5k exactly, but if you are looking for a measure of improvement over previous race times, use it, but consider the margin of error.

Course distance was 8k , gps watch measured 8.02k.

It's not so much this example I was asking about ,it was in general do ppl count Pb distances within a larger run.

My own personal philosophy would be that if it's based on an official race split, I'll count it. If it's not, I won't. But it's not a big issue. When you think about it, if you can record a 5k PB during a 5 mile race, you should be able to run so much faster in an actual 5k race. You just have to go out and do it.

Of course it's a PB. The clue is in the name: personal best.

If anything I'd record it as a "must try harder" in the next race of the shorter distance.

So when the IAAF lists a PB in their athletes biography section, it might actually be a split they recorded on their Garmin while participating in a longer event? Smashing! Must send 'em on a few of mine. :)

If you appear in the IAAF biography section you probably don't time yourself. ;)

I don't run anymore but when I did, I only ever regarded a time as a PB if it were the time from the official results of a race. That makes it an independently verified PB. Personally recorded times in my opinion cannot rank as PB's as they are not verified by someone other than the runner.
