SO as title states,it seems theres a lot of mist around classic insurance, some details im over 25+ this year, have full EU license for 7+ years and been driving since then, only trouble is ive no bonuses on my name, always named driver. Now id like to have a sports car for weekends but cant afford all the taxes and insurance that comes with most of them,so was looking into toyotas MR2 models year 1990-1993,some sellers state that they are in classic insurance category, some dont say anything. So most companies wont even go into the details but i heard of few brokers that ex:champions insurance that do insurance for these cars, but once contacted them they told me id have to have another daily driver on my own name? So does it mean i have to be insured with them for two cars, also if car gets insured as a classic does the road tax come down as well or is it only for vintage cars? Also does nct still apply for classics ?and last question would it be possible to get insured only for weekends?
I would appreciate anyone in similar situation age group to answer these questions,as theres almost 0 information on the internet and handful of brokers who do such insurances, any help is appreciated :) ,as my current insurance is up in couple weeks time and would like to see is there any changes possible to make.Atm im driving 1.3e car.

edit:not to waste peoples time ive seen similar topic few threads down but, would like advise, on not having any ncb on own name ,and being insured with different company (aviva) currently, and does mr2 qualify for classic.thx

MR2 will not qualify for classic tax, car must be over 30 years old.
Car must be first registered anywhere before 1 Jan 1980 to be NCT exempt.
Car generally needs to be a second car to obtain classic insurance.
You generally dont need to have the daily driver policy with the same company as the classic policy.
Mileage is normally limited, never heard of a weekend policy only.
I've never been asked for a NCB on a classic policy.

Give the IVS a ring and see what they say.

    a) find and insurer/broker that will insure it as a main vehicle, either on a classic policy (First Ireland 10k mile limit), or a standard motor policy that doesn't mind it being over a certain age (Axa, Aviva)

Premiums for all three of those options will be similar to insuring a regular modern car or more.

    b) insure it as a second/occassional use vehicle (more choice of insurers/brokers offing this), for which you will need a modern main vehicle insured as well, although this doesn't have to be with the same insurer, but they will look for proof. Any NCD accrued on the main vehicle policy may be mirrored on the classic policy if that policy takes NCD into account (some do, some don't).

Good luck with finding an insurance to suit your needs, but I somehow doubt that you will find something cheap. If you are lucky and find something cheap, then expect to have your pocket emptied in other ways, such as motor tax / nct / running costs. Running a classic isn't necessarily cheap.

Motor tax is only cheap for vehicle over 30 years old. So look at dropping 660 EUR for the year in Motor Tax on a 1900-2000cc car and NCTing it every year for ever as it is over ten years old.

(I must be in a good mood today, as I'd normal boot your arse to read the classic cars forum charter :p)
