Corporate Golf Day - Serious Scoring

We played in the final of a corporate golf outing yesterday. A big outing where lots of teams qualify from various regions and staged on a serious course.

The scoring format was scotch foresomes.

Winners had 47 points, second was 44, third 43 points.

I was flabbergasted, winners played off 16 & 17, so they went around in +4, we reckon. Tough day aswell, very windy and soft.

    Is this normal?

Unfortunately, scoring is gone crazy for the last while and scores of over 50 points are being recorded in fourballs regularly while scores of over 100 points are being recorded in team events.
    Try scoring those off scratch!

Foresomes or 4ball there is a huge difference. If it is 4somes as in every second shot that is a mad score. They would win 90% of Barton cup matches with that. If it's 4ball as in 1 to score on each hole then it is high but not a crazy score.

nope, scotch foresomes. take best drive and then alternate shot.

Scotch is easier alright when you can have choice if drives. Still that's serious scoring all the same

I make it +6 but still a very good score, the odds of one of you being on the fairway is pretty high though isn't it?

Are you giving them a combined HC of 17 there ssbob?

Because I make it +5, but I have them off 16.4
    Player 1; HC 16 * 0.6 = 9.6
    Player 2; HC 17 * 0.4 = 6.8
Assuming they scored on each hole and playing of 16.4 then I think they had to shoot +5.

    12*3points = 36 (12 pars)
    5*2points = 10 (3 bogeys plus 2 pars on Index 17 & 18 where they had no shot)
    1*1points = 1 ( 1 D bogey)

It's certainly possible alright. I played in the Tipperary final of the Belvedere Cup recently which is scotch foursomes for people with handicaps of 18 and up. On the front 9 we had 23 or 24 points (we didn't have to putt for a birdie on the 3rd) and we were only all square!

In all the matches the scores would have been in the 40's.

Having the extra drive off the tee is huge imo. If there are 4 par 3s, you shouldn't be over par with the chance to hit two shots into everyone. Then being able to take the best drive or even take the lesser drive but the better iron player to shoot in is a big advantage.

I always think that if I want to win a scotch foursomes competition, 44/45pts would be required on a calm day.

No added 16+17=33 divded by 2 gives you 16.5 or playing handicap of 17 then 47pts-36pts=11pts, 17-11= +6

Open to correct, but I think you multiply the lower HC by 0.6 and higher HC by 0.4 to get combined HC.
    Anyone know for certain?

Thats the correct way to do it, but lots of times its not done that way...

Was a valid GUI handicap required for entry and how many pairings were there?

Didn't realise scotch 4somes was 2 drives, in that format is not a super crazy score, playing smart and with a bit of luck on the par 3's u could rack up a good score. If u had 1 guy who was a good driver and chipper and one who was a good iron player and putter u could almost make a perfect golfer out of them.

Fair enough with 2 low handicappers but at 16,17,18 handicap they should not be consistent enough to keep scoring pars over the 18 holes to get 47 points. To shoot that they musn't have hit one bad shot all day.
Watching scotch foresomes interclub, winning teams would never be shooting 2 or 3 over for 9 holes let alone 5 or 6 over for 18.

In the qualifier last year we had over 50 points at Carton House and it was just one of those days where everything clicked. The only time we missed a GIR we managed to chip into the hole. I don't think we could even dream of something like that again. Pity we couldn't follow it up at the final. So it is possible they just had one of those days.
The conditions on Wednesday though were extremely tough with the wind. We were guessing that a 41/42 would definitely win it. We had 37 and thought we played well given the conditions.
