Built my HTPC back in Jan, using an i5 2500k processor. The motherboard didnt have HDMI built in so i picked up a cheap Radeon 5450HD video card as it had a hdmi out on it.

Just using it for video, audio is over spdif.

    But I get stuttering on 1080p rips...not very bad..but I notice it.

I have tried a few video players, with the same results and various codec packs?

Is the problem potentially the graphics card or should I just keep trying diff codecs till it plays nice?

    WHat player are you using?

Maybe you need to enable hardware acceleration ?

Did you defrag the drive? I encountered similar problem with high bitrate 1080p on my brothers setup and it turned out that the bitrate was up near 30mbit which was putting the un-defragged drive to it's limit. A defrag sorted it.

Its only relatively new and yes i checked the defrag status recently all looks fine. I will have to check at home what bitrate the last file was at.

I had a rip of "Get the Gringo" which had noticeable stutter in places

The Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge processors are better for video decoding than most discrete graphics cards due to Intel Quick Sync. I would consider getting a new board with video out.

Besides i5-2500k is way overkill for a HTPC I have a Celeron G540 in mine and it runs perfect.

Regardless of it being new, Windows is terribly dirty for file management. Don't use the default Windows one, get something like defraggler and set it on a schedule after your first run

    yeh I know its overkill.....:D:D:D:D:D::D:D:D:D:D:D

i think i tried other defragging tools but will check when I get home. so consensus seems to be a s/w or hdd issue rather than graphics card? Would that be correct?

I doubt if it's hardware, even onboard graphics has been fine for HD for a lot of years

    Update your video drivers first.

Now, in VLC you have two options, software decoding (on your CPU) or GPU decoding. Your setup is more than powerful enough for either but sometimes it helps to try both.

Tools > Preferences > Input & Codecs > GPU assisted decoding.

Toggle it back and forth and see if it helps.

Its most likely a case of hardware acceleration needing to be activated in your player, also if its running vista or 7 then try to turn windows aero on/off in control panel and see if that makes a difference.
