Avensis Estate feedback

    I'm looking at a 07 avensis d4d aura 2.0l diesel, and a 08 avensis d4d TR 2.2l diesel (both estates).
Can anyone tell me what fuel consumption to expect on these cars (I would expect to do 25-30000km/year) and any differences between the two models?
Any feedback from owners appreciated (please don't tell me it's a boring car, boring is good compared to my last one!).

I have a 08 2.0 D4D TR spec hatchback and average 44-45 mpg. Estate verson will problably be slightly lower.

The 2008 one you are looking at is a UK import, it is higher spec than the 2007 Aura model. The 2.2 litre is 150bhp compared to the 2.0 litre which is 125bhp.

Is there a substantial price difference between the two?

Be careful of the 2.2. They've been prone to head gasket issues.

Thanks Bazz, 2k difference. I've driven uk imports before, paid for the full history check beforehand. Is there anything in particular I should be wary of buying an import?

I wouldn't bother with the 2.2 its not much different to drive than the 2.0

That said, i wouldn't get the aura either.

What's your reason for not liking the aura? Bearing in mind that I'm looking for a reliable family car!

The Avensis uses the 150bhp version of the 2.2 litre which don't seem to suffer from head gaskett failure like the 180bhp version.

Its the base model of the range, the spec is not great on it.

It has SFA as standard, and the all black interior is horrible. Try and get a T3X or TR or T4. The T2 is the UK equivalent of the Aura. Sadly Toyota Ireland only sold the Avensis Estate in Aura spec.

Would you not consider something else as well?

There is nothing wrong with that generation Avensis, but other cars will be just as good for reliability but will be much nicer and there is a much wider choice of engines and specs; you should really consider the Ford Mondeo and the Honda Accord as well.

It doesn't have rear electric windows for a start, a must if you have kids.

Plenty higher spec tourers in the uk.

Notwithstanding that, I believe the 2.2 T Spirit in the UK was 148 (or thereabouts) and had a run on HG failure.

Thanks everyone, plenty of food for thought there. Looking at a few A4 estates aswell but have to come down a year or two for the same money.

Keep an Octavia estate in mind too, the higher sec ones are quite pleasant and not nearly as common as the hatchback

I have a 06 T3X, UK import, does 48mpg, do about 45k kilometers/yr. Very reliable, comfortable and tons of space in it ! :)
