    On the website it says

"Please note a current valid passport is required at registration when collecting your student ID card."

My passport is currently out of date, would a Garda age card or driving license be acceptable?

Well last year they would only take my passport and not my age card , so I would say the same applies for this year.

Out of date passport is probably ok. I have previously used driving license with a birthcert.

Seen this on the registration FAQ:
Section 6: Undergraduate Orientation & Card Collection

1.I’m a first year student and I’m not sure when I should come to the ‘Street’ area for Registration
Please refer to your orientation schedule enclosed in your welcome pack for when you should collect your ID card with your class group.

    2. What do I need to bring with me?
You must bring your Student Number (which is listed on your welcome letter), a current valid passport, and evidence of your Fee payment or confirmation from SUSI that your application for a grant has been successful.

    3. I don’t have a valid passport, what ID can I use?
Passports expiring within the last 12 months where the student is clearly identifiable can be accepted with another form of photo ID e.g. driver’s licence.
A driver’s licence along with a long form birth cert / certification from a Garda station is acceptable. Unacceptable ID is bank cards, Garda ID cards, etc

I got mine with just a driver's license. Probably depends on the person you see on the day.

What's the story with the actual photo on the card? Do we need to bring one or will they take it on the day?

Think I'll be ok with a passport that's been out of date since june and my birth cert? I don't have a driver's license.

Can anyone help me here, I don't have a passport so I sent away for one a few days ago, I tracked it and it says I'll have it on the 25th of September which is too late, as the cards will have already being given out, and I also sent my birthcert away with it so I don't have that either, nor any form of photo ID... What do I do?

Wait till your passport come I guess. I have to wait for the grant to come in before I get my card. Theres going to be plenty of 1st years without cards for the first few weeks

Go in anyway, and tell them your situation. If you've paid your fees, then ask them for proof of registration, which will get you into the library, etc.
My grant didn't come through until near the end of October, so I was walking around with this letter all the time :p
Don't worry, they understand. Once you get your documents back, bring them to Registry, they'll then take a picture and print your student card there and then :)
