    Hello all

Took this car for a test drive today :

    January 2007 BMW 320D Automatic

It has 70,000 miles on the clock.
It's the pre efficient dynamics model

seemed a nice drive, just one issue :

When I came to traffic lights , I would stop, leave my foot on the foot brake and have the gearbox in D.

After about 30 seconds of this, the engine started to shake back and over and I could feel these vibrations in the car.

Tried this out another couple of times, and sometimes it did it, others not

    The AC was turned off.

Any idea in what this issue could be ?

    Thanks rover James

I know things like this are very hard to diagnose over the internet etc but does it sound like a massive problem

Walk away, it's someone else's problem right now, dont make it yours.

Is the car in a dealership? If so, the fact that they let you test drive it like that is telling.

I might be wrong, but it sounds like a fuel pump problem.

Nope, its a private seller. He bought it a year ago and at the time he bought a 2 year warranty with the main dealer. So there is still a years warranty left on it with a main BMW dealer which is transferable to the new owner ( I checked that out )

He is an ex pat and is moving back to his home country sooner than expected which is why he is selling. The car he is selling was mainly driven by his wife so he has not much experience with driving the car.

He is aware I am not happy about this issue. He is going to bring it back to the main dealer to get it checked out, which is fair enough

And then we will take it from there

That's rare, and IMO it's a biggish plus. My mother has an 07 320d auto from new - it's a lovely car to drive, but we've had more than one occasion to be thankful for the extended warranty.

Sounds sensible. The ideal solution for you is that he have the problem rectified and then you buy the car.

Plenty of 320d's around. I wouldn't get to attached to this one.

True, but automatics with warranty aren't two a penny either. Depends on the car, I suppose.

Yeah this lad is above board, no messin with him, I know by my dealings with him that he is sound. He said at the time, he just wanted to buy the car and have the backup of a warranty which is why he bought the 2 year thing

I suppose thats whats drawing me towards the car, the fact that it still has 1 year left on the warranty with a main BMW dealer - which can be transferred to me.

And also the fact that the seller is willing to take time off work etc and bring it back to the main dealer and explain the problem to see what they think and get it fixed under warranty.........or if not we have come to an arrangement, which also involves me test driving the car again to make sure im 110% happy . If not happy after all this, I walk away

and its a nice car too, very clean, good tyres, well kept.

Sounds good to me. Sometimes being a good judge of character can be worth more than being a good judge of cars.

Dunno, I'd be thinking it might be a mounting.

It can Anan. But me thinking the seller is sound and respectable wont be worth a ****e to me if the engine blows up !!

But In sayin that, the seller is trying his best to rectify the problem now........... I know most sellers would say " if you want to buy the car, then buy it, if not, then F Off "

From speaking with a friend who knows stuff about engines, he makes out this shaking/ rough idle could be any one of the following :

    > engine/gearbox mounts
    > vibration dampner pulley
    > fuel pump
    > loose/corroded injector connector
    > fuel rail pressure sensor
    > The gearbox
    > fuel relay
    > fuel pump
    > injectors

if you are serious about the car tell him and ask him to leave it in with a bmw specialist to check it over and try and ascertain the cause of the problem...

Why would he do that when a main dealer will most likely solve the problem for free?

Well he is leaving it in to a main BMW dealership in Dublin......

fair enough for getting their opinion on that issue or getting it rectified, but I would want an impartial opinion and check over if actually contemplating going ahead with the purchase....

could be an option but I think if I suggest this, the seller is definitely going to tell me to F off :)

If you trust the seller, the car's running well, and you have a warranty then I think that should be enough. Idbatterim just doesn't want to admit to having posted before reading the thread. ;)

but any car can potentially have issues some minor some, serious that often even the current owner isnt aware of! i had a 325ci checked by Faheys in Galway prior to purchase, was chatting to the guy that carried out the test, he said he has had so many instances where car has had serious damage before and when its mentioned to current owner, its the first thing they know about it... maybe im just paranoid about the depreciation and amount of things I had to replace on my last car :)
