    Hello,

I began cycling a few months ago mostly for exercise and it's great. I have bib shorts and short sleeve jerseys but now that we're heading into the autumn/winter I'd like some advice on what clothing to get. Are leg/arm warmers enough or would I need full length cycling tights and long sleeve jerseys?

And also which rain jacket would you recommend? Something lightweight and easy to fold would be great.

    Thanks.

I have compression long sleeve top and shorts as a base layer then full length bib tights on top and depending on how cold it is I'll just wear a hi viz muddy fox jacket or a fleece lined cycling jacket and hi viz bib. I also have overshoes and a hat for under my helmet and finally winter gloves

    Shoe covers
    LS jersey and leggings
    Hat/bala
    Clear lens specs

All or most of these can be bought from aldi or lidl or second hand on the for sale forum for a few quid.

In addition to everything here, I found a neck buff to be very comfortable on the cold mornings too.

The Endura 'Baa Baa' merino wool baselayer. Brilliant for keeping you warm (even if wet) and not smelly (synthetics tend to smell after a bit).

3/4 or full length 'roubaix' tights

Some kind of wind proof jacket/jersey with a waterproof front. I have a Gore 'Windstopper' which cost something like GBP80 a few years ago. Really good, I'll happily cycle all day (or night) in the rain with this one.

Overshoes. Keeps your feet warm (though not necessarily dry).

I have a ton of expensive, good quality running and golf wind and rain gear. They include compression base layers, warm mid-layers, wind blockers and galvin green paclite short- and long-sleeve waterproof shells. I presume these will be grand for cycling??

I find in extreme cases a tonne of metal with glass inserts and an engine does the trick ;)

how could does it get when out cycling over the winter?

I'd play football all year round and normally just wear baselayer top, jersey and top and shorts. I assume its the wind factor that would get cyclists?

Two things you want on the bike: Breathability and no flapping. If you have a breathable thing that flaps it'll slow you down.

Snug-fitting wind blocker / water resist sounds like the thing.
