Turbo Issue

Bought a 09 VW Passat 2.0TDI 140BHP 86K on the clock now it has 91K about 4 Months ago.

Got a 3 Month Engine and Gearbox warranty from the Garage and took out the 1 Year extended Engine and Gearbox warrante from Mapfre.

Monday night coming home from work Engine Management light comes on and today the garage tells me its a Turbo issue. I know this job will end up costing me over 1K.

Mapfre wont cover the cost of the turbo as its not part of the engine it is part or the fuel system according to them.

Where do I go from here?

Pi$$ed off does not begin to cover it.

That sounds b*llox to me. I would make a claim against them in the small claims court. Feckers .

Its easy to say it isn't covered now. I had not seen this before today. I was told the extended warranty would cover engine and gearbox for the year. The onlt reason its worth taking this out is for the likes of injectors or a turbo failure etc.

How much did the extended warranty cost? Did you get any policy documents?

When I first bought my golf I got 3 month engine and box warranty, 6 weeks later I had turbo trouble and they replaced it with a reconditioned unit without any problems! No harm putting up a bit of a fight OP, you can't be in a worse position than you are now!!

That link to what's covered includes the turbocharger as long as the milage is under 100,000 KM.

OP - Is that 91,000 miles or km?

No, it's three different levels of cover. The mileage only limits availability.

Depends on the policy MM, the engine and gearbox one doesn't state turbo

...and that's what I get for scanning instead of reading

    Engine Code P0299

I'm after getting VW to cover 50% of the part as a good will gesture.
    It's 91K Miles.

Turbo not covered in the policy but I didnt see the policy document until today.

The problem with these 'engine and gearbox' warranties is that people often assume that this means that anything under the bonnet is covered when in fact its normally just the gearbox and engine internals, i.e gears, pistons, crank, cams etc.

A turbo is a external component so this is often how they get out of warranties like this.

I presume, though, that the garage has more evidence then just that fault code for deciding to change the turbo?

    I always question these warranties,

How can engine & gearbox not include the turbo,

Basically it means that the turbo is treated as an ancillary - If this was the case, does that not mean that the car would operate as normal without the turbo?

What if the shaft/fins break up and are ingested and cause internal damage, would this be covered by one of these warranties?

*Edit, totally in the wrong frame of mind here, Im on about dealer warranties, not mapfre
