Wonder is related to this or is it just co-incidence?

Coincidence I'd say as they found that bomb that belong to WWII when digging while doing construction work.

Sky News ticker says the airline, Vueling, say it is due to a mis-communication between the pilots and ATC.

I've just been watching the Dutch news there, and they're saying it was a false alarm probably due to some kind of miscommunication. EDIT: they've just said it was due to a lack of communication between ATC and the aircraft, either radio failure or incorrect frequency. It has landed though.

I got an alert yesterday from flightradar24 to say Royal Air Marocco flight 690 from Tanger to Brussels was squawking 7700 and sure enough it was in a fast descent and landed at Bordeaux at 1700 UTC. Anyone hear anything more on that? It landed at Brussels 2 hrs later.

Just got another alert now of a Thomas Cook off the coast of Kent squawking 7700, heading for London.

It's the code that the crew dial into their transponder that identifies them on the ATC system. 7700 means Emergency, 7600 means communinications failure and 7500 means Unlawful interference (eg. hijack).

Gone out of coverage at 900 ft now so I assume it's landed safely.

yes it does... I mean what else would give them a reason to think hijacking is happening? Communication problems can occur for number of reasons

sure after avheralds post we all can act smart, but in reality - dutch atc have to learn how to communicate with media.. not to long ago (in early spring) local Dutch media announced that Wizzair flight to Eindhoven has crashed when in reality there was just a hydraulics problem. think about it!

I would think it's just an over hyped media, sky milked it for a while, the first I heard of it was driving home on the radio and they even said it was mis-communication,I don't use avherald so there is no acting smart,if they did squak hijack it would of been the first thing reported

    This one was autopilot failure.

Why squawk 7700? Is this a UK requirement? I would expect "unable RVSM due".

We don't know what happened initially when the problem occured. If it disengaged suddenly it could have caused problems, like what happened to this ANA flight the other day, when the pilot switched off the rudder trim through confusing that button for the cockpit door button.
