I am looking at buying a 2007 Seat Ibiza but someone told me not to buy the 1.2L 3 cylinder Ibiza.

How do I know whether it is the 1.2L 3 cylinder Ibiza?

    Are they that bad?

You'll know the second you start it up - if it sounds like a cross between a sewing machine and a bag of spanners then you'll know it's got that engine:)!

Is there any other way of knowing? I will be looking at the car later.
    Are they very unreliable?

The tax disc - all 1.2s have the same three cylinder engine. They have a bad reputation with some because with only three cylinders, they're not as smooth as most cars which have four cylinders. I learned to drive in a Skoda Fabia (same car underneath) which had that engine and it was a grand little engine - no rocket obviously, but I loved the oddball engine note!

There is nothing wrong with that engine reliability wise provided there is service history and the history is genuine. They can give trouble if not serviced at the appropriate intervals, but that's the same with pretty much any car.
