    Hi all,

I hope this is the right forum.....feel free to move if not.

I'm pretty retarded with 'puters and all that there stuff, but i was wondering if someone could help me out:

    I have a Macbook Pro. I have a Windows 7 laptop. I have Parallels 7.

The question I have is pretty simple - am I able to somehow get the Windows 7 on to my Macbook Pro, or do I have to buy/acquire a Windows installation disk?

Any advice would be really helpful,

    Thanks

Windows 7 on your laptop was most likely preinstalled (OEM), meaning you can't use it on any other computer. You will have to buy/acquire Windows 7 (the license key is more important than the installation disk, which can be replaced).

    Thanks for the help.

Windows 7 itself wasn't pre-installed (think it was Vista - but then I upgraded to Windows 7) but I imagine the same goes.

So what is this 'migration' thing that Parallels wants me to do?

Did you buy a full retail version of Windows 7 (not an upgrade disk)? If so, you can use it on your Mac, provided you wipe it from you other laptop. Activation by phone will be required, a nice chat with a Microsoft rep will sort it out.

You can migrate the operating system and programs of an existing real machine (i.e. your laptop) to a Parallels virtual machine (as opposed to installing the operation system from scratch).

Again, you can only do this with a retail license, not OEM. If you do this with an OEM installation and Microsoft finds out (their operating systems do phone home for a reason, you know), they will happily revoke your license and you may not be able to use either anymore.

    Nah, I didn't.

Feck sake. What a swizz. Big bucks for a full version of Windows.

    Thanks for your help.

That's the way it is. To them a virtual machine is as real as any other computer, hence they're asking for real money. ;)

Ah, I understand. Just a pain.

    Another question though:

If I was to get an old cheap full version of Vista (or XP or something) and then update it to Windows 7, would I be able to migrate the Windows 7 or would only the Vista (or XP) be able to be migrated?

If you get XP or Vista retail and install it on a virtual machine, you're eligible to upgrade it with your windows 7 Upgrade disk, however, you must wipe Windows 7 of your laptop if you have been using the same disk/license to upgrade Vista on the laptop.

Then you will have to activate by phone, swear by the soul of your dear mother that you're not a software pirate and Windows 7 has been wiped it of the laptop. ;)

Not always the case, have moved windows installs between computers many times without having to call for re-activation. Also, any time I have had to call, I did not have to speak to anyone, just went through an automated system.

    ps, love your sig Torqay

Its when the automated system fails, you get to speak to the rep ;)

Is the Windows 8 preview an option here at all? Use till Jan and then maybe 7 could be cheaper?

    Hey Rucking,

Yeah, I was looking at that. As soon as you install Parallels it gives you an option to download Windows 8 preview. I did't bother as I wasn't sure if it was a "full" version. I know it's a beta thing.... I was wondering if I downloaded it and then downloaded some Windows programs what would happen once the preview expired.....

I might do it, see if it's actually worth the money having Windows on the Mac and take it from there..

    Cheers.

You can download the "real deal" (not the consumer preview), all you need is an MSN account (which is free). You'll get 90 days free trial and may activate it later. It will be reasonably cheap at the launch in October.

That's great info. Think I'll do just that.

    Cheers for all the replies!

Yea, thats more like it^^^, Did you see a price around for it getting it this way though?

Outside of getting it through an upgrade, it's a hard thing to look up, you drown in a sea of sites with the same old info, €15 for an upgrade if on a Win7 machine bought since June 2, £25 if you bought before that.

The Key would Hardly be for £25 if got through MSN between now and Jan31?

Well, there is no official pricing yet (except the 15 Euro upgrade coupon with new computers sold before Oct 24th), but rumour has it, there will be a $70 promo offer until Jan 2013.
