Replacing traditional fireplace with doublesided fireplace

Hi - we're looking to build a kitchen extension onto the side of our house. Access to it will be from our current sitting room. The external wall in the sitting room will need to be partially knocked. This wall is 4 metres wide, 10ft high. There is a chimney in the middle of the wall, with a large chimney breast, probably 2 metres wide, and a foot or so out from the wall. It is flush from the outside. Its an old house.

The new extension will result in an L shaped room, where the long side is all new (about 9 metres long & 5 metres wide), and the short side of the "L" is the current sitting room, 4m x 4m. It would be nice to have a double sided gas fireplace to replace the chimney breast, so we have a source of heat, with access to the new room by knocking down either side of the fireplace, and possibly slimming the chimney breast a little if that is an option. The lining in the current chimney is not good, so that will need to be done.

Has anyone done this before? I'd welcome any considerations people advise, or suggestion for type of fireplace etc.

    Thanks!

I have done this on my house. I would suggest that if I understand you correctly you shoul remove chimney fully from top down. Provide a structural support to reinstall chimnet above ceiling level. If you have a double sided stove in your kitchen/ living room the visible chimney element will be a black flue pipe matching stove colour. I dont know of gas stoves as mine is solid fuel. The stove flue is simply inserted into the chimney flue and sealed with fire cement. Double sided stoves require a bit of research as not every supplier has them and typically they dont have much choice as they are not a big seller so you will need to chase them down!
