Sick Cert.

    Hey guys,

Not sure of the best place to post this but decided here. I went into work Monday but had to go home sick. Went to the doctor who said I had a minor throat infection but should be grand by today and gave me a sick cert for the same. She also prescribed antibiotics for 5 days. The infection has pretty much cleared but i have a rather nasty cold instead of it.

Juat wondering on standard practice here. I'm rarely sick and this is the first time in this situation. I don't really want to call in sick but don't feel ready for work. Should i go back to doctor again? But would she give a sick cert for a "simple" cold? Would there be anything against going to a different doctor as the other doctor has large waiting times?

    Thanks.

I think it's reasonable to go back to the doctor and ask for an extension on the cert. It's perfectly acceptable that you might have developed a cold as well as the throat infection, and therefore may need more time off work. It's no big deal I think.

It is however probably best to go back to the same doctor as they will be familiar with the situation, but if you have to go to another one, just bring the existing certificate with you and explain to them what is going on and I'm sure it will be OK. If you are sick you are sick.

Call into the doctor's receptionist and ask for an extension. The practice manager might be able to arrange one without you having to see the doctor.

The receptionist is just there to answer the phone i think. Don't think she has the authority to do the above really. I'd have no problem going to the same doctor except i'd be waiting 2 hours+ even with an appointment. The thing i'm kind of most worried about is if flu/cold is treated as a "legitimate" illness. I mean, i'm rarely sick and wouldn't take time off unless necessary and hence i feel unfit for work but do doctors and employers look at it the same way?

Yeah that makes even more sense! I have done it myself. Why didn't I think of that. Depending on your relationship with your doctor you might even be able to call them and ask them to extend it...

It's quite a valid illness. I got a sick cert for the first time ever this year, for a flu as it happens.

The doctor looked at me and immediately gave me a week's sick cert. I thought it was overkill, and that I'd be back at work in no time. But I ended up taking pretty much taking all the week to recover. By the end, I was working from home, but I was still in no condition to be in the office.

My suggestion. Go talk to your doctor and take their advice.

You normally only need a cert if you're out sick for 3 days or more (a bit of a grey area with the half day Monday though) so you could check that out with work first and see if they'll need you to get the cert extended? If you do then you can go about ringing the doctor again.

That's part of the receptionists job all right.

I didn't say the receptionist was going to write you out a sick cert.

Sorry, i wasn't trying to sound sarcastic, i thought you meant that the manager would just write a cert him/herself.

@ Woodchuck, yeah a cert is required after 2 days off, so technically i could take tomorrow off also without another cert. personally though IMO in this day and age, i'd rather be certified for all days off if possible as it looks better.

You could say to the receptionist that you were already there and still aren't feeling up for work and just want to get your cert extended for work. With any luck the doctor won't need to see you again but could just leave a new cert with the receptionist for you to pick up?
