Automated petrol pump question

So I filled up at a tesco petrol station earlier, an automated one never used it before! Put my card in and entered pin. Machine said card authorised and I could top up to €99.... only put €40 into it. All grand tried to print reciept but nothing came so I left it.

Now the possibly worrying part, came home and checked online banking to make sure that was all that was taken out of it but nothing has been taken off my card.

So does anyone have any experience of this??? I always thought when using laser the balance was instantly taken out! Now I am worried I done it wrong and just drove off without paying and be getting a knock on the door from guards

I think Laser transaction are normally done in batches, something like during the middle of the night. Keep an eye on your transactions all the same

    No receipt paper in machine.

    99 thing is normal.

Twill be grand, whatever you've used will be taken out of your card

If you have AIB Internet Banking, open the account and click 'View Pending Transactions'. It should be there...

Just checked it this morning and still no money taken out of it! Guess I'll be taking a spin up later to see what the crack is!

The final transaction can take 4 days so I wouldn't worry too much. Odd though that the authorisation didn't stow up online.

Every time I use my Laser card it takes about 3 or 4 days for the transaction to show up on my internet banking so I wouldn't worry about it!

    Same here
Takes 3 to 4 days for it to appear on my online banking .
    Everything else is within minutes

Sure either way, if there was a challenge that you didnt pay, they have you on camera. Which means they have your reg. Reported to the Gardai. Check the camera, see that you put the card in the machine and looked like you paid. I wouldnt worry about it OP. It will probably go in tonight I would imagine. What garage was this do you mind me asking?

Used the Great Gas automated station on the N2 a while back. never again. Needed to fill my car so choose the €110 max option. Filled up the car which came to around €90 or so. The next day my account showed 2 transactions..one for the €110 and another for the €90. Rang them and they explained they block €110 off your card until the actual petrol amount comes through and then release the €110 back to your account. Problem is they are with a different bank than me so the whole process takes 3 days so I was down €110 for the 3 days.

A Tesco employee showed me that you could get a receipt from a different pump that the one you used by inserting your card and pressing 'reprint receipt' - if the other pump has paper of course.

It happens to me so often that I now see it as normal behaviour; the payment has always eventually appeared though - I wouldn't worry.

And therein ends.my relationship with them before it even starts! That's utter lunacy!

That happens with EVERY automated sales machine where you are given access to private resources, every automatic pump in the world does this. It's just an authorisation with the bank. It stops them losing out the cost of the petrol if you neglect to complete step 2 and pay for the petrol you use. The money's still in your account, you just don't have access to it. The block will come off as standard in a few days once the petrol station has received the funds from the bank.

The same thing would happen if you took your card out of a POS terminal prematurely, they authorise the funds first then actually take them once you put in your PIN.

With respect I think your missing the point a bit, Yes the money is still in your account etc etc etc, however if your mortgage payment request is presented that day by another bank to this account, and the 'held funds' result in you not having enough to pay it your mortgage could be unpaid and all what that subsequently entails.

Which all as a result of using a automatic petrol pump thats meant to make things easier makes a bit of a nonsense of the concept.

I was countering the original point of the thread that the op was boycotting the petrol station because of the authorisation hold. Of course the hold is inconvenient if you don't have much to play with in the account or you need to make a big payment in those few days. Just be aware of the workings of the hold if you need account flexibility.
