i drive a 99 Fiesta 1.25, as a runaround its hard to beat, easy to work on, parts relatively cheap and plentiful, easy on petrol, pretty nippy (for the engine size obviously), not exactly a looker though

    Yay Fiestas :D

    Not bothered with looks TBH.
Have the ST for that :P

Just looking for something cheap to tip in/out to work and keep the mileage off the ST

fiesta or punto for me. had a punto and it was amazingly economical

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 10,006 ✭✭✭✭mik_da_man

    Hadn't looked at puntos.
    Will check them out...

i know youll hear all sorts about them but i dont think youd be afraid of maintaining it somebit mik so i would recommend a 1.2 8v wholeheartedly

Don't get a punto for the love of god!

I had this thought a while back, then decided with the extra money on tax, ins, etc I'm better off just driving the Lexus and enjoying Every Commute

I know petrol is gone crazy, but I really have no problem paying for the privilege of enjoying the ride and wrecking the environment :)

Ah I'm keeping the ST regardless :D
I just want something cheap to run for during the week, I do all city driving and it's a killer on petrol. Not really able to enjoy the 2.5 power in poxy traffic...
Plus the ST is nearly 5 now and I want to try keep the mileage down.

The descriptions on some of the adverts there are hilarious, a "high" spec 1.6 Vectra that does 45mpg. :D Those Lagunas are a disaster, you will end up walking or getting the bus instead.

Something like this might be worth looking at:

I've been driving an 00 Peugeot 206 for like 5 years now and it hasn't let me down yet. Obviously have had to replace a couple of bits and bobs such as brake pads, batteries, tyres, etc... but that's to be expected.

It's cheap to run, tax and insure so can't complain really :)

An ex had a 206 and it had a few issues.
Was cheap enough to run but I never liked the pedal setup on them.

What post of mileage would you be doing in the second car?

    It won't be huge.
    Probably 12k km a year.

    It does look nice.
However what's the fuel economy like?
Also I kinda need 4 doors with the kids...

    My heart says yes :)
    My head says no....... :(

I can't see any actual savings to be honest, is it worth the effort and expense to keep 60k kms off the ST over the next 5 years? :)

i second the fiesta , great cars

    Well the ST drinks juice.
12k km would cost me about 2.5k in it.
Say I got something that did around 40mpg the saving in fuel would buy a small car and tax/possibly insure it for the year.

It then frees the ST from being a 'family' car :)

.... at 1.70l and getting 40 mpg from the new yoke you'll save a grand on fuel, the 2nd thing will have to be NCTd annually too which is 5 per cent of the fuel savings straight away.
I can't see you buying a car that will return 40mpg around town and taxing it for a grand. The insurance will be a few hundred too at least.
I'd do all the sums and have a think about it.
DAd has an accent and the sister has a carisma, before that she had a Ka, none of them return close to 40mpg around town, even with regular runs on the ring and link roads.

I'd second that thinking Mik, awhile back I was thinking the same thing but when I sat down and done the math on paper having even a cheap second car didn't make sense when I added up the cost of running both cars (runaround for the week and ST for the weekend)

May have to have a good think about it so...
What sort of mpg would a fiesta do around town? I thought I'd be able to get around 40...

My first car was a 1.25 Zetec Fiesta and I would have only been doing short 8 mile trips to and from town in it and while I can't remember the exact MPG it wasn't as light on fuel as you'd expect.

    Hmmm...
Not as easy decision as I thought...

I get about 33-35 mpg exclusively short and town driving.

I can get closer to the 40 with motorway driving

Really? I'm kinda glad I didn't buy one in the end.

My 1.4 Clio does 40 in the town and 45-47 on the motorway. :o

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 10,006 ✭✭✭✭mik_da_man

40 sounds good to me :)
Might take a look at some clio so.

    What year is yours?

I suppose I should add the 40 mpg to my original requirements.

Would the be any point looking at larger cars which might get that mpg around 1k or do they exist?...

I was thinking if it was a saloon size id be more inclined to do more family trips in it.
But I guess the running costs would rise accordingly...

Was thinking about this last night, car was empty a couple of days back, and I put in €10 (payday tomorrow). Hit cancel button on the odometer, out of habit, looked at it last night, have put up 43 miles and still driving, all town driving

BTW, that got me about 5.7 litres of petrol

1L Suzuki Swift, cheaper tax than Fiesta/Punto.
    I get bout 45mpg short/urban
On longer jorneys often get 50 mpg, got 52mpg once. Runs on Fumes.

I've had a Fiesta & Cinq = same engine as punto.
Got rid of cinq as too heavy on petrol and higher tax than 1L, basically same reason I got rid of the Fiesta -old model.

I've had 4 swifts at this stage and they are so cheap to buy parts for and never lets you down, just make sure the engine is good.

I carried washing machines in them, 8x4 plywood on the roof & can even fit my 12'' 6 ft Telscope inside.

I'm not sure if the newer swifts are 1L
