Well, my springer is 8mts old now and im still not happy with his retrievs. Ive worked on sitting and staying and quartering and hes flying at that. Wen i give him a retrieve he flys out to fetch and then tears around wit it in his mouth, wen i call him in a cross tone he comes.and at last minute turns and tears off again. He will come wen called if hes quartering or running straight on scent. I even built a run yoke today 20feet long and 4ft wide so he hav to come back so on i went and introduced him to it and threw out the retrieve....he went on the fetch command and picked it then came back bout 5ft and he stopped to lie down and play wit it. I stepped back and called and he flew out off to one side. Noway does he want to give it to me. Im at wits end. Any help?

    Have you my Dog:D

He is only a pup short retrieves and get on your hands and knees and when he comes back give him lots of praise and petting at the same time taking the dummy/tennis ball from him. Need to get into his head that its better fun to bring the retrieve back than play with it.

However my lad is grand today then tomorrow it's his retrieve and not mine..............but I wouldn't swop him, great nose on him and a good pet

stop trying to take it from him let him get comfortable holding things around you without you taking them from him try walking him on the lead and then drop a retrieve in front of him but dont let him pick it until you say so, when he picks it relax and just rub him under his chin and chest give him loads of praise while he is holding it in his mouth. then when hes totally relaxed take it from him saying dead or give or whatever if he doesnt seem relaxed give him more time he will learn that its ok to be near you with something and that its a good thing and he will be ok with it the last pup i had was a really finicky retriever and was dead uncomfortable bringing retrieves in the last 10 feet this worked a treat with him and ended up having a lovely delivery would sit and hold it right up looking at ya pity he got a belt of a car on me, just a thought and sure someone with far more expieriance than me will put you right but worth a try but only every second or third day try not to overdo it could put him off you become obsessed with it and force the issue how is his hunting is he hitting any kind of cover for you yet

i find having another dummy or tennis ball in your pocket and start playing with if he stops short ,the greed will get him and he will come running in,then do what snipe02 said leave him hold it and rub rub rub.i ask my pup to sit when he gets in that way its more polished

Its hard to get him to relax, hes mad to go all the time, dosent take much care now when you pet him, he used to go mad for the girlfriend to rub him but in the last 2mts hes no intrest just want to be going.
hes hunting grand and turns fairly well on the whistle, dosent range to far and is going to cover, no messing i mean cover like big ditches, rattles them like a bulldozer already. hes coming on grand only for this retrieving, im afraid il instill somthing that cant be put right.

give him a week off ,then put a long lead on him leave him trail it behind and guide him in with it ,dont tug or pull sharply as he might drop dummy just use it as a guide in ,when he starts in the right direction drop it again and only pick up lead when/if he starts to pull away worked on my pointer

Shorten your training pen to about 10ft.
