Wicklow 200 - Training tips

    I am seriuosly thinking of doing the wicklow 200 next year but i have a few questions.

    1 - What kind of training should I be doing eg. distance/time
    2 - When out on the bike what drinks are best eg. dilute drinks or lucozade sports.
    3 - Does joining a cycling club help

    Any information or advice would be great, I understand its not easy which is why i want to get the training right.

    At this stage it is really just about getting time in the saddle. No need for specific training.

    It will take you between 7 hours (which if you can do that training isn't an issue for you) and 13 hours. Either way, it is a long day on the bike so getting used to spending time on the bike is very important. (not 7 hours mind but 4/5 hour spins).

    If you have hills to climb around where you live then by all means incorporate them into your spins, if you don't it not a major issue at this stage.

    Get out on the bike. Look at your diet and see where you can improve it. Get used to the gear (shoes/shorts etc), get used to the gels and other foods you will eat.

    It is 10 months until W200 2013 so plenty of time no matter what stage you are at. Joining a club is always very useful. If nothing else, most will be organising their winter spins from Oct/Nov and this will give you a focus to get out on days when you probably wouldn't bother on your own.

    Food and drinks wise, what works for me is porridge and a mug of tea before heading off, and a bars, bananas, flapjacks and drink to bring with. Something to replace salt is good, such as sports drink, but many bars will also have plenty of salt.

    Mostly though, what Leroy said. It all comes down to hours in the saddle, with a few hills thrown in.

    Use sportives to set yourself goals. I find paying for an event focuses my mind and gets me off my arse on cold or windy monings. I started with a 30k then 60 then 100 then 120 and finally a 150. This all had me set up for doing a 200+k

    Don't know how far you have ridden to date, but plenty of sportives coming up to get you going.
