In Car Transmitter that opens gates.

Does anyone know if there is a generic "in car transmitter" that can be wired to the lights, so when you flash the lights it opens an automatic gate. I know you can get brand ones but I'd like to see if you can get one and program it myself.

Would getting a keyfob and programming it not be easier?

Keyfobs for the major gate systems are only a couple of quid.
