Sky in Belgium.

    Hi folks,

I'm living in Belgium for a while and have brought my Sky box with me. I am continuing to pay my subscription at home.

I have hooked it up to the satellilite and while I am getting a Signal strength of approx 90% and a Qulity of around 50%, it is telling me there is no signal when I search for listings. My lock indicator is saying OK.

Is there more I should be doing as I am obviously missing something, besides the picture :D.

    Thanks

Is the dish your using aligned on Astra2(28.2e)?
    What is your network ID?
Sky's is I think 0002 and occasionally 0000. also the transport stream is usually 07d4
Check these are what you have on your box, if not the dish may need alignment.
As the majority of dishes in Belgium are aimed at 19.2e and 23.5e.

Ok, I'm aligning the dish via compass. I looked up where it should be, around 150d SE?.

Not sure about the transport stream ID as I plugged out the box and when I turned it on, I had lost everything. It was 4175 or similar before hand.

    What is 19.2 e and 23.5e?

    Thanks banie

The dish is most definitely locked on 19e - the dish needs to be moved to 28.2e to get Sky UK.

Sat installer would do it in minutes m8 - well worth getting it done right.

What is 28.2e in lay persons speak?

What is 28.2e in lay persons speak?

Position in space for Sky UK Channels etc, your dish needs to be aligned to this to receive the channels on your box.

Is there a compass reading for it?

+1 your dish is pointed at 19.2e.
Your options are to move it yourself, I'd recommend using www.dishpointer.com as a starting point can be frustrating but very rewarding in the effect you get it right ;) put aside a bit of time if you go this route.
Or get an installer out to sort it for you, shouldn't take him 15 minutes once he has easy dish access.

28.2e is the orbital position which the Astra2 sat constellation is located.
eg. the position of the satellites geosynchronous orbit relative to the equator and the prime meridian.
It allows quick identification of where to start pointing your dish to lock down a signal.

See if this site helps m8 http://www.dishpointer.com/

Is there a compass reading for it?

Put your location into www.dishpointer.com and you will get your compass bearings.
Also remember you will need to adjust your dishes elevation too.

If you have an Android phone and maybe Apple there's an app called "Satfinder"

Will point you in the right direction for the satellite.

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.esys.satfinder&hl=en

    Its also free

So I eventually got myself a basic sat finder meter. After much messing about, got it going.

Right now, I have about 60% strenght and 10% quality. I do have a handful of channels, mostly the ones I didn't even know I had.

Many of the other channels say "No satellite signal being received" will this improve when I improve the signal quality?

The others say "This is the wrong card for this set top box, insert the correct Sky viewing card" It's the same box and card I have always had.

Thanks for any light you can shed on this.

Somethings wrong there, you should be getting better signal than that. Sounds like your still on the wrong satellite to me
I assume your getting rte etc on the epg at 101 etc?

I can get the shopping channels and the Welsh one SFC. Thats all I need, more channels in a language I don't understand, I include shopping in that :p.

To be fair, there probably is plenty more adjusting to be done on the dish. I used the website the lads recommended earlier and I am pretty sure I am in the ball park.

If you are getting S4C then you are at the right place. Your dish needs to be adjusted ever so slightly to get a better signal.

Yeah, been messing about up there and now have strength at 90% and quality at 45%. I now have way more channels then I had :D.

Still getting the "wrong card" error message on a lot of channels, any ideas?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 223 ✭✭xxyyxx

Sounds like your viewing card may need to be paired to your box. You will need to call Sky to get that done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,080 ✭✭✭✭Micky Dolenz

All is right in the world.

Everything works now and right in time for the game later. I just left the box on and it must of picked up on the "keep alive" signal.

Thanks for all the comments and help.

    That time again.

I've moved on again and looking to set up some Irish TV. I already have Italian SKY so know I will need a second dish. I am still paying for my Irish service but haven't used it in so long that I don't think I need it. I would however like RTE, mainly for sports and news.

Is there a freeview box I can get that will give me RTE? and what satellite in the sky does it work off?

    Thanks

You are going to struggle to get access to the satellite in Italy I'd imagine, http://www.ses.com/4628803/astra-2d

If it's just RTÉ you are looking for you could look into getting access to the RTÉ player over seas, there are some good blogs out there that you could look for, I could check for you by proxy if you'd like, but you'd want to be careful to hidemyass

Oh yeah, if you have an Irish address that you could put a box into you could look into getting a Slingbox, great piece of kit.

Crap. This is why I had little trouble getting a signal in Belgium.

Most of the people over on After Hours will think you are mad for wanting to watch RTE.

No. RTE is a subscription service on 28E. There is a free service on 9E but you can only receive that in Ireland.

It's for Rabo 12 and GAA and other manly stuff. Defo not for Tubs or anything like that.

We won't think any less of you for wanting to keep up to date with Fair City and The Voice.

I don't think you've much chance to get 28E that far south, there has been talk of Sky narrowing the signal even more, I'd hate to think of the size of the dish you would have to get to get any bit of a signal, I think IPTV is going to be your best bet.

Ok, so the dish is out the window.

What's the craic with this IPTV?

IPTV is just a fancy way of saying Internet TV, stuff like RTÉ, Magnet, TV3/TG4 Player, Sky Go can all be regarded as IPTV, other solutions are coming available where you can get an entire solution via the internet (i.e. no cable or satellite needed), I'm not fully up on it to be honest.

Have a play with Hola and other stuff to see if you can get players to work, I'd be surprised if you didn't, it's very straight forward. Personally, I have my VU boxes connected to the internet so when I'm travelling for work I can just connect to 1 of them and stream from there, but that mightn't be an option for you.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

If there are any more I would be more than grateful especially if I have it up and running(with decent quality) before the 6 Nations kick off on Saturday :D.

Italian TV will show the games so it's not all lost.

You could give xbmc a go.

Download xbmc and install it. Go to settings and select video add ons and enable the irishtv addon.

Then return to the main menu and select video add ons and select irishtv. You should see rte, tv3, aertv and tg4. Aertv is the live channels and the other 3 are the player's.

You can also download the xbmc superepo and install it. It has an addon called filmon which gives bbc, itv and a few other English stations. It works well in ireland. There are 2 filmon add ons in the repo. The first one on the list is the one to install I think from memory.

The filmon addon works perfectly in Ireland but I wouldn't be 100% sure the irishtv one will work abroad without a proxy or vpn. It's worth a try anyway.

I'm in south east poland. I have a 1.1m dish and cannot get rte, BBC, ITV here. All others on sky platform are good. If I'm desperate to watch anything I use xbmc. 1 channel add on and filmon add on. The Irish TV add on doesn't work for me here.
I'm motorised, so I hope to get an HD feed for rugby otherwise it will be France 2 or dmax Italy for me.

I added a new file source under program/file manager. It's http://fusion.xbmchub.com and I named it fusion.

Then I went to video addons and install from zip file and downloaded the updated version of sportsdevil addon.

It has loads of different streams for sports including setanta Australia which should have some gaa games.

Not all of the streams work but a good few did.

I found this info on the xbmchub website.
