Cost and condition of camping sites in Ireland

As mentioned in another thread I'll get the ball rolling ...

I stayed in Lough Ennell caravan park weekend of 17/8/12 and it cost €29 per night (PN) for 2+2 inc electricity hook up (EHU) . The camp site was mostly mobile homes and the facilities of the playground and toilets/showers were very dated although it did have a shop and a nice cafe/restaurant.

It'd be great to have something like this for the campers, though it can become quite subjective when you start talking about the quality/condition of somewhere. Various people, various expectations.

There is a subsection about Camping Locations in this forum. Maybe we should continue populating the regional threads and keep the information together ?
Or would it make the information too remote from the main forum ?
Or should there be a sticky for this purpose by region (Ulster, Connaught, Munster, Leinster) in this forum ? (I actually had temporarily forgotten about the subsection myself !)

See my post below from 2 weeks ago regarding my weekend stay in the Salthill Caravan Park

Stayed in one of the campsites in Salthill over the weekend.
Pitch with EHU costing €29 for 2 adults in a campervan.
I thought that was bad enough until I noticed the coin operated showers and then the coin operated "hot" water at the wash-up sinks.

Overall, the site was clean but it was nothing special or out of the ordinary to justify those rates. No rubbish bins other than the "skip" at the gate and the touring pitches are very close to each other. Drainage on and around the pitches left a lot to be desired.

The tourer section was about 75% full and there seemed to be almost full occupancy on the mobile home section, so it is definitely bringing in the loot.

Dont think I will be going back but then I suppose that most sites in Ireland operate a similar pricing structure so it was probably par for the course.

Cant help but feeling that I was ripped off though.

I would have to agree here, it is all very subjective.

Experience of other fora on boards with similar kind of threads has tought that this can turn into a moan-fest sometimes. Also as people are more likely to complain than to praise, these threads often have a negative undertone.

Boards is now one of the biggest Irish internet resources and were you to google campsite XYZ in Ballygobackwards, the (potentially negative) review from this thread would be one of the first results.

That's not quite fair on the reviewed site, as they can't really dispute their review ...on other fora these kind of threads have even led to legal challenges against boards.

So, I don't really have any other choice but to nib this in the bud and close this thread.

Please respect this decision and do not start another one, thank you
