then maybe it's time to find a registrar which is, like, 4 times cheaper? i.e. namecheap.com or internetbs.net ?

As much as I don't want to be THAT guy if you had any interest in the whole SOPA affair remember that until they bowed to customer pressure godaddy were in support of it. Not a company I'm willing to hand cash over to any more.

I'm not saying you shouldn't and I don't mean to be preachy but I'm sure there are some out there that knowing that might prefer to go elsewhere.

I'm with them and find their servers very slow.
if you want an American hosting company hostgator are better.

I transferred all my domains from them after that. Also, read an article alleging they auto-register certain domain names searched for through their site.

There are far cheaper and better hosts out there including Irish based ones. Even with the 32% off

For the sake of a couple of euro, I would prefer to give my money to someone that respects their customers not vested interests. There are good value registrars in Ireland too.

GoDaddy have constant allegations of them domain kiting / domain testing.

When you check to see if a domain name isn't used and one of their servers is queried, the domain name can be registered by them before you can register it. Not sure if they have been caught doing this so legally speaking all I can claim is that they are a bunch of cyber squatters hoovering up expired names. (past stats like 93.5% of names they registered were dropped when it was going to cost them money)

Moral of the story - as long as the likes of GoDaddy exist - if you have a good idea for a domain name, don't look it up, register it as the first step.

Use blacknight.com. Same price and supports our own country. Same service.

Godaddy spam the **** out of your inbox every single day. Literally every single day.

And before you say block them. think of it this way. Youre not gonna block there emails in case they send you an important email about your site.

I always suspected some registrars of doing this which made me somewhat cagey checking availability.

I always thought BK had a good rep - if one was looking for a good registrar and host whom would you recommend?

Never really had to ask them anything so that didnt matter.

Do you mind me asking what was it you had to contact them for?

their DNS malfunctioned which left my site down for 4 days until it's been resolved Tuesday morning - 4 days later

there's not one Irish company that offers 24/7 technical support, one of the reasons I don't use any

4 days would have pissed me off aswell but i can honestly say i never had a problem with them. Surprisingly they are pretty much the same price as the major American hosts.

Also it benefits you if your aiming at the Irish traffic to host in Ireland. Not 100% sure of that as no one really knows exactly how google works but i thought i read that on the Google blog before. Even if its just slightly quicker load times.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,000 ✭✭✭fl4pj4ck

nah, the difference between Irish vs UK is too small to make a difference

and you know a good host by their resolution time when things go wrong, ones I'm using have straight policy: if the uptime drops below 99.9% (which is roughly 45mins) they refund whole month

yeah i was more on about Irish vs USA but youre right. it probably makes a difference thats not even worth it.

Maybe its the luck of the draw but of everyone ive hosted with Blacknight definitely have the highest uptime. Usually any sites that are aimed at Ireland and make money i use Blacknight.

    Worldwide sites i use http://www.server4you.net/.

Fastest Dedicated server i have ever had. Really has never had any problem and really good control panel.

I have an account with Pingdom and its saying 99.76% uptime for last month.

You raised a bargain alert about a company that a lot of people don't recommend. What do you expect?

It's good that people voice their concerns.

There're plenty of BA's raised where people have nothing but good things to say about the company too.

In fact, I think it's the discussion that takes place here that makes boards BA better than hukd.ie who have ran promotions to try and encourage discussion but haven't really pulled it off.

I was dealing with Godaddy recently, not a good experience considering I was just registering a domain name... had to call them up in the USA and found them fairly useless

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 987 ✭✭✭psicic

I like it as a bargain alert, Op! :)

I've always found GoDaddy fine for domain registration, email accounts and basic hosting. Starting using an affiliate of theirs back in 2001-ish and now have a few services/domains with them themselves. Switched away from one god-awful Irish crowd, who seemed to begrudge doing the most simple, routine thing - so my urge to 'buy Irish' in relations to registrar services ended back then.

Of course, I don't think they should be considered a service primarily aimed at professionals and experts ( i.e like many of the informed people on this thread) - I think somebody operating a commercial venture or a tech-savvy person with spare time might want to look elsewhere - since, if you know what you're doing and employ a mixture of skill, free tools and technical knowledge - you can get a more tailored experience elsewhere, cheaper.

Where they shine for me is simplicity.

Always found them quick to set-up with, and very good for introducing people to their first website, be it a blog or webstore or whatever. (I'd imagine a small business who wanted to manage a site inhouse without hiring IT staff could also do worse - but I can't honestly say I've experience above a sole-trader level). There appears to be a lower learning curve for their products then some of the free solutions out there (at least back in 2009, the last time I did a comparison for a non-tech savvy person). I've directed numerous people to GoDaddy products over the years. Some have stuck with them, some have delved deeper and ended up moving on - none have gotten themselves 'overwhelmed'.

My own use of them is very vanilla, so I don't find myself having to contact their technical support. I may have lost access to a site for a matter of hours in the last six months that I'm aware of - but it's a low volume site so it didn't really matter.

I have reservations about their corporate structure, the senior staff, some of their previous business practices and, well, a general lack of trust. Just not enough to make me switch.

I just think they're an okay domain registrar if you're not looking for anything too complicated.
