Background checks, how thorough are they?

Just out of pure curiosity, does anybody have any clue what goes on during this process?

I know part of it is to see if you have a criminal background, which I don't. It's more to do with one aspect of my employment history.

I'm taking it you got sacked, let go, etc, but you hope they don't find it? It depends on how good/bad the HR are, but most often it's to ensure you don't have a record.

No, I've been upfront about that.

Was self employed for a short period, but don't have proof of this. Which is something they require.

I once ended up not taking a job and taking another as they refused to believe that I had attended a particular course that they could not verify as part of a background check, and my start date was extended.

Is this for an American company by any chance?

No, it's not an American company. I was let go a few weeks ago, and could do with getting the job.

I could possibly fudge the self employment issue with the assistance of my previous employer, but I've to sign a disclaimer to state all the information I've given is correct.

Hey im in a similar spot. I am getting a background check and a year long job on my cv was "cash". I should state im only a student and this is a work experience job but everything i stated on my cv is true. How will this go down.

From experience and not that I've ever done it but honesty is the best policy don't try and fudge/lie on your C.V,You never know when the past could catch up with you.

Honesty is indeed the best policy.

Lying as part of the interview process can invalidate any contract based on the interview process giving the employer grounds for terminating when the deception is discovered.
