Don't ask me why but I took a look at cbg.ie today to see if I could find some bangernomics action. Pretty simple search, 5 door, between €500 and €2k. It threw back 874 results which didn't exclude cars that had 2 doors, 3 doors or 4 doors, despite me wanting 5 doors specifically. It also didn't exclude motorbike helmets, motorbike jackets, tractor tyres, tractor grabs and all manner of entirely unrelated items. It wasn't a case of inadvertant or deliberate user error where the seller had described the item as having 5 doors when it didn't, it is just a piece of non functioning junk. It's like having a whole bunch of switches and buttons on your dashboard, all labelled for specific useful functions, but they do nothing.
I then sorted by price, lowest first, and on the default 10 results per page setting I had to go to the third page before I got what should have been the first add by price.
It was a truely awful experience. I can handle two or three 'premium' adds at the top or on a sidebar of a page that contains 10 results that match my search and are sorted as I specify. It's not as if the so called 'premium' adds stand out in any way because they're just lost amongst the other so called 'premium' adds and initially just made me think that the sort function didn't work, just like the database filtering didn't work. I don't know why anybody would pay for these adds, I really don't.
It looks like a case of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing. No doubt some hotshot at CBG must have heard how google make their money, but missed out entirely on the fact that google actually tries to present the user with the most relevant results right from the get go. It's no wonder the site never gets a mention here when people are looking for recommendations on where to find/sell cars despite offering free adds.
