HI , HAVE A QUESTION HOPEFULLY SOMEONE CAN GIVE ME SOME ADVICE. I graduated from college in dit with a ordinary degree in electrical energy systems and control engineering. When leaving i said i was never goin back. however i have decided to give my honours ago. my major in the ordinary was energy systems(power). i have to pick between power and control for a major in the honours any suggestions as to which has more job prospectus. and any one that's been there is it hard to pick up control if you have done power.

My preference would be control, but my advice would be pick whichever appeals to you more. I do not think that it will not make an enormous difference to your employment prospects.

I'd agree with this, chances are if you like the course and have interest in it, you'll be more willing to study etc and come out with better results making employment easier for yourself.

    To add:

I did the power option in DIT. My brother did controls in UCD.

I work with a company that builds custom automation machines - a career that is founded on controls.

My brother works with a company that makes med/high voltage distribution equipment.

So I'm not sure it matters what major you pick!

You heading into 3rd year of DT021 then?
I went with power myself after doing the first 2 years of DT 021. The power electronics is very interesting however the electrical machines section was worse than useless as we had a lecturer who hardly bothered turning up, couldn't speak the language (seems to be a problem in there) and downright refused to give anybody any feedback on labs.
On the control side from talking to the lads they seem to like it but just a word of warning, there's alot of maths involved especially LaPlace equations.
Just to give you a quick heads up as well. There will be 80+ in 3rd year and they can only cater for 30+ students as this is what they are historically used to so expect an awful lot of being messed about.

that's dit for ya. think i had that lecturer last year.i just found the lecturer we had for power in dt009 went with the people who picked up the material quickly and left the rest and when you asked questions you where shouted down.is there much report writing for the power in year 3/4 in the machine part of the course. My project for dt009 was a boost converter (power electronics) which i really enjoyed. My main reason for switching was the lecturers you talk about and the prospect of jobs but as dave2pvd said it dont really matter . I have my placement almost sorted with a company that deals in the telecoms and renewable sectors. i have my form sent in with control as my first choice dit dont like letting you chance to easy makes work for them.thanks for all the advice lads.

The reports are not to bad actually, we covered induction & synch machines in the lab. Got to do a good project as well, it was simulating an induction machine in simulink.
Different lecturer for 4th so it'll be a big improvement.
The power electronics is excellent though, the lecturer is brilliant and really knows his stuff, comes from an industrial backround.
Thats a good call on organizing your placement now because with larger numbers they struggle to help everyone get sorted.
Did you go with Digital communications? Can't recommend the lecturers in that enough and it's very interesting plus there's a little bit of overlap with the power electronics as well.
I've plenty of notes and books on pdf for 3rd year, pm me if you'd be interested.
