    Hello all,

Starting Mech Eng. 2nd yr as mature student in UL, I did the cert in IT Sligo back in 05, being working in Industry since, want progression so going to finish the degree and maybe more. Just wondering if anyone has any advice from how they found it or if anyone did something similar to the way Im doing it.

Im under no illusion about the workload and jump in math, and use of math in nearly every subject. Did ordinary in leaving cert, but when i got to college and actually worked at it I grew to really enjoy it, and it helped get my Distinction in my cert in the end. By looking through what was covered in the first yr in UL, I already know Im behind but slowly working my way through more and more every week, consistency and work really does work, who'd have thought! haha

I came from a cert course into 2nd year Aero Eng, which used to similar enough to Mech Eng in 2nd year, nearly ten years ago now! I started in UL in Sep 03 and we used to do 6 modules per semester but it appears there's been a re jig and you only do 5 now.

I did find the Eng Maths module pretty intimidating to be honest, I hadn't really a clue what was going on in lectures. There is a maths learning centre, which I stupidly never went to, that others found pretty helpful. If I remember once I started going over past exam papers and tutorials I started to get better at what I needed to know. In the end I ended up with a C3 which I was happy with as after the first few lectures I was wondering what mess have I got myself into!

I don't remember the maths being too difficult in any of the subjects other than Maths itself, well not in second year anyway. The Mechanics of Solids and Themodynamics modules do involve maths to a degree but as you are working out a practical problem it is easier to grasp.

If you've been in an IT or working in industry you might have used 3D CAD before which should put you ahead of the others for your CAD module. That's one thing I did notice actually. There were a few things I did in the IT which were apart of the 2nd year modules in UL. the only difference was maybe we didn't go as deep into them in the IT.

I don't know anything about the Applied Mechanics so sorry can't help you there.

    Thanks CatFromHue,

yeah have being told that about the change over form an IT to a Uni, expecting as much. I do have lots of experience in Solidworks and Catia so the CAD subjects should be a breeze but they aren't usually difficult anyway. Been told there's a very good math center down in UL so hoping that will help with any problems in the math end of things, plus a bit of hard work Im sure will do the trick. Called down to meet the course director in April, showed me round, very nice set up down there, very impressed.
