Typical of boards, someone asks a genuine question then in come the righteous on their high horses harping on about VRT.

In answer to the OPs question unlike GB the MOT is not done in a normal garage. It is done in a test centre which you can book and pick online here: http://www.dvtani.gov.uk/onlinebooking/vehicletest.asp

You may have to ring them to get your car put on the NI data base first time. I would add that they are incredibly helpful on the phone.

As others have said, go online and book it. You pay in advance with a credit card and enter your details, all pretty straight forward. Newry is probably the nearest test centre.

I would have it well prepared before the test as you dont want to be driving
all the way back for a retest, for something silly like headlight aim.

What address did you give to the insurance company when they asked where you keep the car usually etc?

Before I re-reged my car I phoned up my UK insurers and they refused to insure me when I told them I was now in Ireland (I wasn't when I took out the policy with them initially). They told me to re-register the car and get Irish insurance.

I was told the exact same when I moved from UK.

If you do not inform insurance company of change of address you could invalidate your insurance.

As OP is now living in ROI I can't see the point of having an MOT or UK motor tax, it does not serve any purpose here if OP gets stopped for any reason.

All MOTs in NI are done by a single provider - there is no garage system like in GB. So its irrelevant where you go.

But here is the killer for the OP, they will only MOT cars registered with DVLNI.

If its a new car IE 3 years old then you cannot get an MOT in the North, its a government centre up there so unlike the UK its not a local Garage, if the car is in its fouth year you can get an MOT in NI.

    Its quite confusing.

In Year 4 you can get an MOT in NI on a UK registered car

Not true Im afraid. You just have to call them the first time so they can put it on the NI MOT system, after that it can be booked or rebooked online. Last time I checked you cannot use the NI MOT to tax a car online, but you can do it in a post office.

    This is a good one!!

Unfortunately the car will need to be re-registered in the ROI - VRT or not it's the law.

Not much point getting stopped on the way to the MOT centre and finding out that you have been driving illegally and possibly with no insurance.

No one was on a high horse - they were just advising the OP that they "could, would" get in trouble with AGS if they were stopped at a checkpoint.
