Have been looking at a few sites and can't seem to find gift vouchers to buy as a present. Basically a friend is moving away for the year and wanted to get something but can't find them anywhere. Have tried hotels.com, trivago, booking.com etc.

    Anyone any ideas?

Thanks but thats only for use on that site which is for hotels in Ireland. Need one that can be used on the sites that have hotels everywhere.

Sorry, I didn't pick that up from your post.

Just wondering if anybody has any experience with this one or knows of any others? I was looking for something like booking.com/hotels.com voucher to give as a present, as I’ve used them a lot and have never had any problems, but they don't seem to do them.

I think most people are a little wary of buying vouchers these days. There's a potential downside of losing them, the vouchers expiring & being less flexible, or simply losing all your money when the company goes bust and no real upside to them other than 'optics'.

While I don't think hotels.com or booking.com or any of those are about to go under any time soon, I think you'll find that people were thinking the same about HMV and other high profile closures right up until the day they closed and the vouchers became useless.

Check out the consumer issues forum here or listen to Joe Duffy for a while and you'll come across a load of reasons why vouchers aren't necessarily the best idea.

If you want the optics side of things, you can always give them a hand made voucher saying that you promise to fund hotel nights to the value of <x> upon demand. That way, even if they do lose the voucher on an island somewhere in the South Pacific they can still call on you. That's not going to work with hotels.com.

I think vouchers are a great idea for smaller amounts - like €10 or €20 - but I would definitely think very long and hard before giving someone enough to cover flights or hotel rooms somewhere.

I think a present that requires me to spend money as well - flights, taxis, meals, etc, is a lousy present.

Rather than spend €200 (or whatever) on a voucher just give me the money.

Basically myself and my husband will most likely be giving money as a wedding present to this couple. However, a few of us are going out for a mini hen party tomorrow night, none of us are going to the wedding (it's a very small wedding, myself and husband were invited but will be away) and I don't think they are having a honeymoon. I was going to suggest it to the others going tomorrow night that we could get a voucher that they could use once the wedding is over, even just for one night away (we are living in the South of Spain and there are plenty of places here that you can go for a very reasonable price). I know that any money given would not be used for that, I know all the reasons for giving money as opposed to a voucher, which is why for our proper present we will do that, I would just feel a bit weird suggesting it to the others.
