An unexploded WW2 Bomb has been found in the plush city district of Schwabing in Munich.
A mass evacuation is currently underway.

Just got a phone call about this 10 mins ago, from relatives living there, nothing on the web or news here yet. This will cause major disruption in the city until it is dealt with, and if it explodes the carnage will be unreal.

Controlled explosion was the only option due to the bomb having a chemical fuse.

I wonder is such a controlled explosion smaller in intensity than the thing blowing up itself?
Or do they just pack it in hundreds of sandbags or something ??

It depends. The EOD guys will try to use a charge to break up the bomb, which allows the explosive to conflagrate rather than detonate, which results in a fireball rather than an explosion. It looks like the Munich bomb just detonated, though. The embers in the air are from straw they used along with sand to dampen the blast.

The Police Warning at the beginning says :

"Within a short time the bomb is going to detonate. Stay indoors. stay away from windows. People wearing hearing aids, turn them off."

My sister went around there yesterday.
She said there wasn't an unbroken window in Schwabing.

Say hello to Mr. Micra for me, he's the only other poster on my ignore list.

I'll consider taking you off it when you grow some pubic hair.
