Jaw pain behind ear

Hi, I was wondering if any one else came across this before.

I've had a feeling of pressure behind one ear and a bit of swelling around the cheek on the same side, went to the doctors thinking it was a sinus problem and he sent me to the dentist thinking it was a wisdom tooth.

Long story short I had an xray on the bottom teeth and there's no wisdom tooth at all, I've been over and back getting my bite adjusted as I couldn't eat on my left hand side as I was getting an ache when eating, couldn't find the exact spot though one of bottom molars had a root canal years back. I had previously had this side adjusted a few months back for the same problem as well, it felt like the upper and lower teeth were hitting each other.

Is it possible if the bite is off that it can cause a sore jaw joint? My dentist has ran out of ideas and said he'd replace all my fillings on that side if things don't settle. Anyone else have this problem before?

I'm going back to the doctors tomorrow just to double check it's not a sinus problem and heading back to the dentist as well later in the week to see what's the best course.

Thanks for any and all help

How'd you get on with your GP?

Have you seen an ENT or any other specialist yet? I think I'd like to rule out other causes before I had fillings replaced.

Using a sophisticated test it appears the pain is definitely coming from that joint, at least it was considerably more painful when the doctor pushed on it. I was given a prescription for an anti inflammatory for the next ~2 weeks to see if it'll settle. It's helped it calm down a bit but apart from masking the pain I doubt this one will heal by itself.

Haven't seen any specialist yet, the doctor said he'd refer me to an oral surgeon if things don't improve, he mentioned also about the possibility of getting a splint, not sure if the regular dentists do that or is that with a specialist?

I won't be getting any fillings replaced soon either, if things don't settle off to a specialist and I'll go with their recommendations.

Sounds good - I'm sure the specialist can/will do the splint, I got mine from my dentist tho. I saw my consultant publicly and they would do the splint but there would have been a long wait (weeks-months) and as I was in severe pain at the time I opted to get it from my dentist. 100 odd squids but it did help.

    Good luck with it.
