As per the thread title guys, I've convinced her to take our holiday in France next year. We will be going on the overnight boat from Rosslare to Cherbourg. But after that, nothing fixed. So to anyone who does it with the family where is good to go? When? Ideally I'd have thought we might get a villa in a nice area with pool etc nice amenities walk to the pub and not too steeped in golf. But a nice drive to the courses/course. 2 adults 2 young children. Thank in advance to anyone with advice.

How many of you play golf, and what temperatures do you like?
Would you travel south a bit or stay nearer Cherbourg.
Do you like beach holidays and/or being near large towns.
What age are the children and what do they like to do?
What do you and your wife want from a holiday?

These are just some of the questions you might ask before deciding,
so if you post a bit more detail of what you want I'm sure that
there are plenty of people who will be pleased to offer suggestions from their experiences.
France has endless possibilities for all tastes and pockets.

Stayed at a campsite Chateau des Ormes last year (lesormes.com), about 3 hours drive from Cherbourg. Campsite had an 18 hole golf course attached, with a driving range, 5 hole pitch and putt and a putting green as well.

Nice enough track, loads to do on the campsite, it will keep the kids happy while you go off and play your 18 holes. Not cheap €30 for 9 holes for residents but met another Irish person afterwards saying playing after 5:00 pm was considerably cheaper.

There are a good few courses nearby but I stuck to Des Ormes, nice to be able to walk to the course.

    Thanks for the reply finewine,

    Some answers.
I'd travel something like 5 hours happily from Cherbourg, I'm not looking to go all the way down south but if someone had a recommendation further I wouldnt be put off by travel.

The beach wouldn't be a major factor either I'm lucky enough to be a member of one of our countrys best links.

I think I'd prefer not to be in a large city though.

Children are young at the minute 2.5 and 6 months but nature walks, swings etc still the order of the day here so not to hard entertained.

All we want out of the holiday is relaxing time + no DRAMA.
    Just me playing golf too.

The ideal is to rent a house in an safe location near to some decent golf in a nice area with no talk of recessions :-)

We are the kind of people who would do the exact same thing every year if we liked it and have no experience of France which is why I posted here in case anyone does similar.

Side note I would like to go to some of the regions better courses and it's hard to find unbiased advice online. Thanks.

Nice reply mate, I'm going to look into this place, at the least it sounds like a nice area. I hope you don't mind if I've any questions for you later. I'd post here thanks.

I travel via Roscoff and have played many of the courses along the west and south west coast, but I have friends who love this place :

Golfing in France is popular enough so you should have no problem fiinding a course no matter where you end up and unless you are looking for 5 star luxury, then most courses are well maintained and enjoyable.

The only thing I would say is that you are risking poor weather by staying in the north of france. The further south you are prepared to travel, the better the climate .... hence we always head towards Bordeaux or further down the coast.

    Best of luck, enjoy it.

Best golf in france bar none is around the Paris region: Morfontaine, Chantilly, Fontainbleau & St.Germain. Some of these private and hard to get on so check ahead.

Best golf on North coast near Calais is Hardelot Le Pins & Le Touquet La Mer

Best golf with some sun is down near Biarritz and Bordeaus with Seignosse, Medoc and Chaberta.
