Peugeot 207 and Renault Clio - Which Engine?

Family member is looking at buying one of these or possibly a Clio in the coming months (which I'm looking forward to driving too :D).

They're looking to spend about 5-7k getting a 2008 if possible. The vast majority of their driving is city. i.e. it will be used for trips down the shops and crossing Dublin city for work. There'll be M50 trips (out to Dundrum etc) on the weekend etc but I imagine that the cross country trips will be somewhat rare.

Fuel economy is a major factor here as is insurance and tax so they want to stay in the 1.2-1.4 range but want there to be a bit of power for overtaking if needs be. I don't know much/anything about these cars. Carbuyer says that the 1.4 diesel Peugeot is the pick of the bunch but I think autotrader said that they struggled to pull the car along. It doesn't have to be a diesel by the way. If petrol, which one offers the best mix of economy and performance?

No research has been done on the Clio as yet as barring a testdrive, they're the second choice. But if anyone can advise on them it would be great.

    Cheers.

The smallest petrol engine we got in the 207 is a 1.4 I think. Drove one and it felt smaller, it's only about 60hp.

From speaking with a couple of mechanics about buying a small 1.2 car for my son they have told me to stay away from Peugeot's as they are terrible under the bonnet. Both mechanics recommended Opel's for some reason. People may shoot me down here but it's just what I've been told. I will more than likely be getting a 1.2 '07 corsa pretty soon due to this advice. Was tempted by a '05 1.1 litre Peugeot 206 until I learned of their engines... Don't know much about the Clio myself but from seeing a friend driving the same one for about 5 years without a bit of bother I would have thought they would be okay.

I'd have a Clio over almost any small car.

My mom and I are currently driving a 1.2 2011 Clio and the computer shows the consumption at 9.2L/100Km which is roughly 30 MPG from about 90% City driving. I have been able to get 5-6l/100Km doing a steady 100 Kph.

In 2006 we had a 2006 Clio MkIII and had no problems with it, also a 1.2 with roughly the same MPG.

That's all the input I can give you on Clio's as I have no experience with 207's

Have you much experience with them? I only know one person who had one of the mkII ones and it lasted her for years without any problems until she sold it. Nippy little thing too....well I was always a terrified passenger

Sold a few of them, knew a lot of people who had them.
