    could anyone tell me what is the black plastic thing between the expansion tank and the windscreen washer bottle on a mk 4 golf 1.4 petrol the connection on my car has a ticking noise when car is running has anyone any idea what this could be.

    Its a carbon canister,the ticking is perfectly normal.

    thanks tossy my friend has the same type of golf and his one doesnt tick like mine.what exactly does it do?

    Its for absorbing unburned fuel vapour which occurs when the engine is switched off as they can't be vented to the atmosphere.

    Most of them click as they get older on the that engine, its a sign that they need to be changed(they have a limited life). There is no effect on the engine, fuel efficiency or anything else if they aren't though.
