Its a army ordnance team afaik.....bomb/ied disposal. They are highly thought of worldwide it seems, what with all the experience from the IRA.

Also i believe its NATO not the UN

Yeah seems they are training folks on how to detect and dispose of mines and whatnot which still kill innocent people. Clear up stuff rather than participation in the war.

Isnt there just like 5 of them? I wouldnt get so concerned op.

Seven in ISAF HQ Kabul I believe. They're essentially part of the directoral staff and it's an excellent opportunity for them to gain experience in modern IED construction and deployment and countermeasures which will certainly translate well into other theatres, like our larger participation in Lebanon.

Ireland is not a member of NATO, so it must be the UN that they're there with.

Yeah, right, I fully expect to see the army on the street dealing with IEDs composed of 155mm rounds in chains by October. FFS, can we have any single discussion without someone flailing in with something about the Irish economy?

So we can show the locals the fun side of debauchery.

This is incorrect, or at least, was at last information released. Only one or two are in counter-IED. I had an NCO worked with an Irish Signal Corps officer. Others are in ops, I/O, civil affairs...

There was a breakdown several years ago in the Irish Times as to who was doing what, but generally they're there as a learning experience for the DF. The is no better place to learn multi-national operations with the latest techniques and equipment than an active deployment with so many countries involved.

    NTM

That was the gist of this piece anyway. Perhaps it refers to something different though.

So, they go over there for training, and thus make Ireland a legitimate target for terrorists (in their eyes). Not worth it IMHO.

Don't get involved in the actions of the US & UK armies...we gain too many enemies.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 16,647 Mod ✭✭✭✭Manic Moran

What a terrorist considers a 'legitimate target' may not hold much legitimacy in anyone else's eyes anyway. (Sortof why they're terrorists in the first place really).

Don't see why we shouldn't have troops there. Irish army have already served with nato troops in KFOR as well as the EU and UN. These missions have the backing of the UN which is how our defence forces receive their mandate for missions. The experience the army has gained is such that they hold training seminars for armies from all over the world. As most western countries, particularly europe have troops in afganistan (even luxemburg) why shouldnt Ireland? Can't cower under our stupid nuetrality forever............

Ireland is not a NATO member country but works under its banner. Ireland is still part of the NBG.

Why are Irish personnel providing support to NATO?

Ireland was a member of the UN security council that passed the unanimous resolution that formed ISAF. If the Irish government voted in favour of the operation, then it is only fair that it also contributes.

First I actually remembered was one of the lads who went out brought his new desert uniform over to show off and that was going on 5 years back ,

Yeah it's snazzy stuff :) Better to have the desert gear than the normal DPM stuff.
